Advantages: compact city centre, lots to see and do

Disadvantages: can be unbearably hot: avoid during July and August

If you're looking for a city break in a beautiful historic city with everything on your doorstep, Seville is your place.

It is great to walk around - splendid buildings, fabulous bars, delicious food, friendly locals - and a real open-all-hours city.

Don't even think about going out for dinner before 10pm absolute earliest - and don't dream of going to bed before about 1am, or you'll miss what this city is really all about: fun and fiesta.

Must-see sights: the cathedral and tower (La Giralda), the Alcazares, calle Betis for evening drinks beside the river, the Santa Cruz district, casa de los Pilatos, Parque Maria Luisa, ceramics shops in Triana.
