Advantages: Small town, friendly people, places to see and things to do

Disadvantages: Can be a bit stinky at times due to the drainage!

I have been to Siem Reap twice now. Once was in 2004 and I also went in Dec 2008. The differences in the town since I last went were amazing. There has been a huge amount of big hotels being built. There is also a new shopping centre which includes an American ice cream parlour. The roads are of much better quality and the town is much cleaner (in general).

Siem Reap is fairly small, it doesn't take very long at all to walk around and see the sights. The markets in particular are a must see as the food stalls are something special! But hold your nose... Although a lot of the souvenirs are pretty much the same on each stall, it is fun to walk around and haggle with the people. Pub Street is the place to go for the night-life and is only a short walk or tuk-tuk ride from most accomodation in Siem Reap. The Blue Pumpkin is a bakery/restaurant in the main part of the town and does fantastic pastries and iced coffee! There is also a place called the Boom Boom Room where you can get a good cup of coffee while you get music and films put on your iPod/MP3 player from $0.75 an album!

I stayed in the Ivy 2 Guesthouse and would thoroughly recommend it. The rooms cost from $6 a night and were comfortable and clean. The staff were wonderful and made the trip even better. The food is cheap but very very good. I recommend the Khmer curry which is incredible!

I would recommend Siem Reap to anyone who wants to experience Asia in a small, friendly town!
