SopronNewest Review: ... train station and then look for the brown and green i signs which lead to the office (which sells cheap post cards, remarkably, and gives free maps and leaflets). Sopron has some good cheap shops, especially for food so if you are going to Budapest or Wien it is worth stocking up. They even have a Tesco....... Sopron is worth visiting just so you can say you have been there. There are trains every hour from Wien Süd Bahnhof and Budapest main station. It's only 30 mins from Austria, but don't forget your passport! ... more |

Sopron is Hungary's "Most Loyal Town" because a very long time ago its residents were offered the chance to become part of the much bigger and better Austria and they declined. You'd never know, though, that it was a separate country as it is swarming with Wien residents daily. Sopron is also Hungary's most historic town as it has 240 listed buildings - the most in the country. This gives rise to a whole host of gorgeous places to look at, and not much else. There're a few museums but not that I would really recommend. One thing you should do is climb the Fire Watch tower and marvel at the view from the top. This costs about 25p for ...
