South Dakota ... Indian tribes. South Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2, 1889. (North Dakota was admitted on the same day.) Located in the north-central United States, South Dakota is bisected by the Missouri river, dividing the state into two socially and economically distinct halves, known to residents as "east-river" and "west-river." In the southwestern portion of the state rise the Black Hills, a group of low, pine-covered mountains. A region of great religious importance to local American Indians as well as a major draw for the state tourism industry, the Black Hills are also the location of Mt. Rushmore, probably the best-known location in the state and a widely-used unofficial symbol of South Dakota.

There too you will feel history beneath your feet. South Dakota is a great state that is not often thought of as a vacationing area. It needs to be brought to our attention more. To visit South Dakota is an experience you will never forget. As I looked at the four faces carved in a mountain, I swelled with pride at being an american. To imagine someone loving their country so much as to endange their life to do such a thing. The love that was put in this monument is unimaginable. At dusk every evening a program is put on for all visitors. It brought tears to my eyes to see the lights slowly appear during the playing of the National Anthem. I was very impressed. The Black Hills is another sight to see. It is one of a kind. Driving through,you never know just what you will come upon. Anything from Eagles soaring to mountain goats climbing, or deer ...
