Sri Lanka ... இலங்கை; known as Ceylon before 1972) is an island nation in South Asia, located about 31 kilometers (18½ mi) off the southern coast of India. Originally known as Heladiva, it is home to more than twenty million people. Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia and has been a centre of Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times. Today, Sri Lanka is a multi-religious and multi-ethnic nation, with a fifth of the population following faiths other than Buddhism - notably Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population (around 74%), with Tamils, who are mostly concentrated in the north and east of the island, forming the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include the Muslim Moors and Malays as well as Burghers.

I wanted the tissues, so I offered the biscuits and although slightly confused, he seemed pretty chuffed and politely only took one, so I ... more

Did you ever wonder if there was a scale of importance when it comes to where you keep your history? With 'Overheard History' somewhere near the bottom, those hearts carved in trees by 70's teenage lovers somewhere around the middle and 'Written History' way up top, I knew from the fourth time I was told of Sri Lanka's 2300 unbroken years of 'Written History' that when I got home the first thing I'd be doing is getting all my history together and writing it down. We'd had three full days of lying down and sitting up and turning over and lying down again so we were ready to explore some of the sights that 2300 years of written history can offer, and at ...  Read the complete review

Sri lanka I loved Sri Lanka especially after going to Goa the year before, if it's a choice between the two Sri Lanka Would win hands down. We arrived in the early morning about 6am, the airport is beautiful and the walk to bus under the flower draped pergola was fantastic. The porters at the airport just beware they are very greedy and to move your bag from the side of the bus into the luggage compartment expect a pound and will get on the bus until you pay. Some of the hotels are nearly 3 hours from the airport so be careful when booking, ours was only 30 minutes we stayed at the club hotel dolphin. The beaches are fantastic they are the strangest ...  Read the complete review

I visited Sri Lanka in June / July 2006. I booked through Kuoni (the World's best tour operator) and opted for their 4 day tour followed by a week of sunning myself in Negombo. The flights, leaving from and returning to Gatwick airport were really good. We flew Sri Lankan air which was simply a different standard of service to that I have experienced on B.A or United Airlines in America. The food was pretty good on the plane. In the back of the seat was a menu and being Sri Lankan it was full of curries. I am vegetarian so I always have the veggie option and can say that this was the best meal I have ever had on a plane. Enough about that though - ...  Read the complete review

I dont a month's travelling in Sri Lanka, volunteering with Travellers Worldwide and looking after elephants. Although I didnt particularly enjoy the company of the people I was there with, the country was fantastic! Apologies for the lack of detail in the review, it was three years ago when I travelled there so some memories and names escape me? Sri Lanka, the pearl of the Indian ocean, is situated just underneath India and, despite the trouble caused by the Tamil Tigers in the North of the country, it really is a wonderful island paradise. One of the things that strikes you about Sri Lankans is that aside from the minority of idiots (which which of course, ...  Read the complete review

Sri Lanka is a country with an area of 65,610 square kilometres. Don't know how useful that's going to be to the average traveller but I remember it from my schooldays and this is the first time I've been able to mention it since then. Now that that's out of the way let's get on with the review. The Climate If you think British summers are hot, please do yourself a favour and stay home! Sri Lanka can be swelteringly hot, and very humid, even unpleasantly so. Your first culture shock will probably be when the heat and humidity hits you when you exit the airport. Don't let that put you off though, no one's died of it yet. I ...  Read the complete review
