Strasbourg

Newest Review: ... especially when the sun is shining as it was for us, the old centre of Strasbourg is surrounded by the river Ill so that it is really an island, people have always lived on and with the river, one doesn´t see the backside but the showside of many houses. The branches of weeping willows hang into the water, swans, ducks, coots pass the boat, it´s quite romantic. Strasbourg flourished from Roman times, but it was the Middle Ages that represented the Golden Age of the city. If you like half-timbered houses then this is the place for you, one can find them throughout the city but most are in the oldest quarter called La Petite F... more

When a colleague asked me if I´d accompany her and a form of 31 15/16-year-old pupils on a 2½ day excursion to Strasbourg I agreed, I knew most of the boys and girls and expected they wouldn´t be too stressful and I´d been to Strasbourg so many years ago that I felt my memory could do with some brushing up. Strasbourg is only 2½ hours by direct train from the town where we live, we got on the train in Germany and got off in France, just like that, no customs people, no border police with Alsatians checking the train, no changing of money. This is what a united Europe means for us! To imagine that not too long ago young people were taught to see the French as ...  Read the complete review

'Let’s go on holiday’ said Ms. M. ‘Hmmm...OK’ I responded (I was probably watching TV) ‘Where shall we go?’ she asked. ‘Hmmm...wherever you want to go’ ‘Would you like to go to Strasbourg?’ ‘Hmmm...OK’ So there it was. We went on holiday to Strasbourg. We could probably have gone anywhere, had I diverted my attention away from the TV for just five minutes. But no, we were going on a touring holiday of Strasbourg. Now you must understand that this was to be a new experience for me – other than the regular visits to my family in France all my previous ...  Read the complete review

Strasbourg is in the north east of France on the German border. It is a very nice region called Alsace Lorraine with many charming assets: towns, wine, traditional food, architectural monuments, universities… Like any other place, it has a history to tell: Before becoming Strasbourg, it was called Argentoratum, fishers and hunters village and was an important fortified place during the Roman era. Barbarians and others tried to invade the city that became a German province from 870. After the 30 years War, France annexed the Alsace but the position of Strasbourg was uncertain. But in 1681, Strasbourg was again a French possession. In 1870 ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Strasbourg- One of the best in France (216 words)

A superb city that has something for everyone. The most attractive aspect of the city is the tourism. So many different people from different cultures visit Strasbourg every year and add to the already existent culture. The large number of museums means that no-one goes away with an empty mind. For example, the 'Musée Alsacien' covers the history of life in the region, the characteristics of the region, the crafts and much more. The city is supported by a mayor who is very ecologically minded and as a result, an electric tram system was setup, running very frequently through the city from a park and ride area. The city itself is of great beauty, the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Strasbourg, home to Europe... (167 words)

Strasbourg, home of the Council of Europe and seat of the European Parliament, is a modern, dynamic city despite being over two thousand years old. The capital of Alsace has preserved some of the best architecture of the Middle Ages, such as the pink cathedral and the "Petite France" area, with its hand craft workshops, galleries, antique and souvenir shops. A restful trip along the canals is a particularly pleasant way to appreciate the many sights. I really advise you to go for a night boat trip on the canals - it's great! Not to forget the specialities which are very close to German cuisine but with finesse and French touch - do not miss the ...  Read the complete review
