Advantages: everything

Disadvantages: the rain!

Sturbridge is situated in central Massachusetts set among a beautiful area known locally as the Berkshires.

There is one main attraction here and that is Old Sturbridge Village, a living museum. It’s a recreation of an early 1800’s New England town and includes many original artifacts and buildings. Like Mystic Seaport, Old Sturbridge Village is staffed by authentically dressed people who perform the tasks of daily life and explain to visitors how things would have been done in the 1800’s. This is well worth a visit and you should allow at least half a day. The museum has several places to eat ranging from a cafeteria to a restaurant serving full meals.

The area tends to get very busy in the summer and we were very lucky to stay in the Publick House, an outstanding hotel that seems to be a local institution. There are a number of buildings but we stayed in the main building and I can’t recommend it highly enough. None of the rooms have TV but all have original floorboards from the 1800’s which I can tell you were very squeaky and not at all even. Most rooms have four poster beds and are exquisitely decorated. Within the same building was the hotel restaurant which again was excellent.

Although it was raining the whole time we were there I could still see the beauty of the place and would love to return again one day.
