 Taiwan ... Táiwān; Wade-Giles: T'ai2-wan1; Taiwanese: Tâi-oân) is an island in East Asia. "Taiwan" is also commonly used to refer to the territories administered by the Republic of China (ROC), a state which governs the island of Taiwan, Lanyu (Orchid Island) and Green Island in the Pacific off the Taiwan coast, the Pescadores in the Taiwan Strait, and Kinmen and the Matsu Islands off the coast of mainland Fujian. The main island of Taiwan, also known as Formosa (from the Portuguese Ilha Formosa, meaning "beautiful island"), is located in East Asia off the coast of mainland China, south of Japan and north of the Philippines. It is bounded to the east by the Pacific Ocean, to the south by the South China Sea and the Luzon Strait, to the west by the Taiwan Strait and to the north by the East China Sea. The island is 394 kilometers (245 miles) long and 144 kilometers (89 miles) wide and consists of steep mountains covered by tropical and subtropical vegetation.Newest Review: ... Food in Taiwan is cheap and there are so many different types of oriental foods you can have, one recommendation I can make is a hotpot, where you have your own pot ( a medium sized pot standing on it's own gas ring) and you order whatever uncooked meat or veg to dump into the soup base in your pot. Having been born in Taiwan, you would think it would be like a second home to me but how wrong can you be. I've recently returned back from Taiwan after a 3 month holiday there and I can honestly say that it's not the nicest country in SE Asia to visit. The country (formally known as Formosa - which I am told means beauty) itself is beautiful but like many countries in Asia it's beauty has been ruined by too many factories, pollution and technology. If you can get away from the main cities (there are 3 main cities in Taiwan, Taipei (capital), Taichung (central Taiwan) and Kaishung (biggest city in the South and the second capital), you can still find some of ... Having lived in Taiwan for about three years I feel qualified to say that Taiwan can be a beautiful country. It is not only the thousands of electronics manufacturers which are dotted around the country as well as other things which are 'made in Taiwan'. There are hills, mountains, other beautiful sites. The people are generally friendly. It is worth a quick stop by if you have the time during a Far Eastern tour.
