Tel Aviv ... תֵּל־אָבִיב-יָפוֹ‎; Arabic: تَلْ أَبِيبْ يَافَا‎) is the second largest city in Israel and is located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is also the main part of the largest and most populous metropolitan area in Israel, Gush Dan (Dan Bloc), as well as Israel's economic hub. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), as of June 2006, the city's population stood at 382,500, growing at an annual rate of 0.9%. 96.1% percent of residents are Jewish, while 3.0% are Arab Muslims and 0.9% are Arab Christians. According to some estimates, about 50,000 unregistered foreign workers live in Tel Aviv.

Tel Aviv is not particularly large, with a population of about 300,000 and most of the sights rather centrally - it's definitely walkable. If you should choose to take a bus, a ticket is 5.5 shekels for a single ride regardless of distance. Bus drivers are fairly grumpy and always in a hurry and buses are ... more

Premium Review Tel Aviv: Be scared of the prices, not terrorist attacks! (1055 words)

For many visitors to Israel, Tel Aviv will be the first place they stop. Ben Gurion airport apart from being a place to be grilled by custom officers, is generally the gateway to Israel from Europe or other continents. I arrived from chilly Germany and Poland where it was just below freezing and was greeted with mid 20 temperatures. I'd been spending a bit too much time teaching English and writing reviews on dooyoo, meaning a distinct lack in exercise so I was looking forward to doing lots of walking. Having arrived just before dusk, I didn't get to see too much on the first evening - just the Dizengoff Centre (a large shopping centre), Dizengoff Square (once ...  Read the complete review

The idea of visiting Israel had been with us for quite some time but somehow it had never become reality, the news we received from the media did nothing to actually lure us to the country. But then I read in a review from a dooyoo member who should know after living in the country for nearly three decades (hi!) that the chances of being killed in a car accident in the UK are higher than of becoming a casualty in a terrorist attack in Israel, this information combined with the long spell of cold and rainy weather at the beginning of May and my Whitsun hols did it at last. My country people are the world champions when it comes to travelling, Israel, however, ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Tel Aviv: The Youngest City In The World (439 words)

Strange place Israel, there is the (allegedly) oldest living city in the world - Nazareth and the Youngest - Tel-Aviv which has only really been around for the last 80 or so years. Built on sand this vibrant city just North of the ancient port of Jaffa occupies a 5 mile wide strip of beach of about 10 miles in length, I lived there for over 3 years (back in the late '80's until just after the Gulf War ended) and I can honestly say that it is a city that never sleeps - there are bars open 24/7. This is a place of extremes - there are some of the richest people and companies in the world living in Tel-Aviv and some of the poorest (myself included ...  Read the complete review
