Thessaloniki ... city and the capital of the Greek region of Macedonia and the periphery of Central Macedonia. Thessaloniki is commonly called the 'Συμπρωτεύουσα' (lit. co-capital) of Greece since the National Schism, due to its heritage as the 'συμβασιλεύουσα' 'symbasileousa' (co-queen) of the Byzantine Empire. According to official data, the Thessaloniki Urban Area curves round the Thermaic Gulf for approximately 17 km; it comprises 16 municipalities and according to the 2001 census it has a population of 800,746.

We didn't eat out in Thessaloniki to preserve funds, but found the supermarket more than met our needs for bread, cheese and salami!# Now, despite all the above Thessaloniki does throw up some historical sights of interest that are well worth seeing. They include the White Tower, the Arch and the Church of Aghios Georgios ... more

More in the news recently for riots than its sights, Thessaloniki is a major greek city that I visited in the high summer of 2007. The actual hotel was very dingy, even dirty, but as we had chosen it for it's location and price we had expected this. The bathroom was shared and pretty grubby, and the shower cubicle leaked. I have travelled to Thessaloniki for a couple of times over the last few years for business and pleasure. If one of you has travelled to Athens previously, when you visit this city you will be astonished! nothing like the polution and chaos of Athens! Situated next to the Thermaikos bay it is always a nice place to have long walks along the sea. Night life or the traditional cafes are strategically situated almost next to the sea offering a beautiful view especially during the sunset. I would have to recomend to those that travel to Thessaloniki to rent a car. This way you could visit the closely situated resorts and beautiful beaches of the neighbourly ...  Read the complete review
