You can get around and about in Austin on the free "Armadillo" trolley - a bus service aimed at tourists. I visited the state of Texas three years ago on a hurriedly arranged holiday which my husband planned. We had been bumped by US Air on our return trip from the US a couple of months before, and my husband wanted to arrange a trip at Easter to use the vouchers the carrier had given us for switching flights. My husband grew up on cowboy films and really wanted to see the Alamo, meaning San Antonio was always going to be on the itinerary. He was also interested in visiting Austin, the liberal state capital of Texas - and lastly Houston - as that's where the main airport for southeast Texas is. So we devised a "triangle" of ...  Read the complete review

"wwweeelcoom to teexaas! weeeree ye froom ya'aallll? inglaand? tthhat near Atlanta Georger?" this was the welcome I recieved from an aerport porter in Huston. If that didn't put me off (and suprisingly it didn't) then his chubby greese covered finguers scratching at anything below his waist and above his short line should have. But I had fallen in love with the lone star state from the plane. It was so vast and dusty from the air it looked like something out of Madmax (I actually enjoyed Madmax). The car we hired was so large that we needed to use mobile phones so that the driver and navigator could communicate. A word of advice, do not ...  Read the complete review

I'm pretty sure most people know that Texas is big but did you know that England can fit into the area about 8 times? I didn't until it took almost a week to drive from one side to the other. I lived in Austin, which is the capital, for almost 3yrs. My husband is American and we were stationed at the base there which they closed in August '93, it was probably the saddest day of my life at that point. While living there we got to see some of the most amazing places. The stores are so spread out you can spend 15 minutes just driving to the next one up the road. The Texas University is in the center of the town and at night its all lit up - a ...  Read the complete review

Even if you know that Texas is big, you don't realise how big until you drive through it. During the summer of 2000 myself and three other people drove from Michigan to Texas to visit some friends after working at a summer camp. We first arrived in Lubbock in the North West of the state and was immediatley hit with the heat. It was over 100 every day, but it wasn't the humid energy saping heat, it was the sun blazing down on you heat. When driving from Lubbock to Austin in the south east the changes in scenery were outstanding. The scenery ranged from rolling pasture farm land to baron rock canyons. The people in Texas and varied but all laid back. We ...  Read the complete review

A stunning site/sight Getting there, it is a bit out of the way, and waiting for 6 people to change a tyre on your ride can be quite boring on the journey back to Puri.
