"Roof of the world", "Land of snows" and "Shangri La" are among the many phrases used to describe Tibet and while they all apply in ways the reality of life for Tibetans is much different. The Chinese invasion of Tibet began in 1949 and led to the flight of Tibets spiritual leader the Dalai Lama 10 years later. There are now over 100,000 Tibetans in exile, mostly in India and Nepal. 1.2m Tibetans have died as a result of the Chinese occupation and over 6,000 monasteries have been destroyed.
