TijuanaNewest Review: ... of a good time, which was also one of my main purposes in visiting. I had my 21st birthday during my stay in America and still visited Tijuana after I was legal in the US because I enjoyed the atmosphere so much. If you are not interested in night clubs and drinking, visit Tijuana in the day time. * Getting there * You can drive to Tijuana, it takes about 1 hour from San Diego, and ... more |

I spent the summer of 2003 working in California and during that time, I paid several visits across the border to Tijuana. When I told my work colleagues I was planning a trip, I was greeted with various, mostly negative reactions. "I hope they let you back into the states" "The police are corrupt, they'll arrest you for anything and take bribes". Tijuana is notorious for trouble and has a bad reputation amongst lots of Americans, who will no doubt have a story about "a friend of a friend who was arrested for crossing the street and has never been seen again" but my opinion is that, it is fine to visit as long as you ... Tijuana is the fourth largest city in Mexico, with a population of over a million people. Tijuana (or T.J) is also one of the most busy international borders in the world. Tijuana is unique compared to other Mexican cities, with it's own culture. In all my travels to Mexico, I have never seen as many bars or nightclubs in one place. The focus in T.J is so much different. The food is also different from most other parts of Mexico. T.J might have a different culture and life-style than other mexican cities, but it is still 100% Mexico. T.J is just another variation of the diverse Mexican culture. I live in southern California so it just takes me two and a half ... Read the complete review

I was told this summer that Tijuana was THE place to go this summer, how come all those people were wrong! I found the town a very threatening and sleazy place, where people are trying to sell you things on the streets and won’t just let you walk past. The only good thing I found was that the legal drinking age over there is 18 and not 21 like the US, it meant that me and all my friends could go out. We stayed in a motel in San Diego and walked over the border-although on the way into Mexico there is no official customs/immigration procedure. A word of warning the police will arrest you for being drunk and load as some people I was travelling with found ... Read the complete review

While staying in LA a friend and I took a trip down to Tijuana for some shopping. We found the place to be a little scary at first because it was very busy and you had to get used to being hassled by salesmen in all the shops. If you showed even a passing interest in anything in the shop they would try to sell it you! Also most of the shops didn't have any price tags, you just had to barter with them, again something that we struggled with at first. All that said we quickly got used to being firm if we didn't want anything and learnt that if there was something that you wanted to buy you should set a price that you are willing to pay and stick to it, ... Tijuana is a small town, just across the US-Mexico border, from San Diego. It's economy thrives on several key industries - mainly bars, pharmacies, and donkeys painted as zebra. If you're in San Diego, Tijuana is a must-see, Mexican laws allow people aged 19 and over drink alcohol - in the US the legal age is 21. Hence the prolific nature of the bars. However, it's an extremely rough place, and I wouldn't recommend staying there overnight - but for an afternoon, some beer & Tequila, some cheap cigarettes, it's great fun. The tram ride from downtown San Diego costs about $4 US. ... Read the complete review
