Advantages: Beautiful and relaxing

Disadvantages: Fish or entertain yourself

I must admit to being confused as to why Tin Can Bay has the name it does. Obviously whoever named the Bay had not done any of the modern marketing degrees available from your nearest Post Office, or else a name like “Paradise Bay” or “Beautiful Bay” probably would have been used.

Perhaps the locals, hoping to scare off any tourists and thereby keeping this little gem to themselves, named it. Perhaps Captain James Cook himself stopped near here on his way up the Queensland Coast (Australia) and while enjoying a few cold ones amused himself by throwing the empties over the side.

For whatever reason it was named, this is one of the best places to go when trying to get away from it all.

It is located about 3 hours drive north of Brisbane (2 hours south of Bundaberg). Located behind the famous Fraser Island, it is often overlooked in favour of its better-known cousin, Hervey Bay to the north.

To get the most out of Tin Can Bay you really need at least 3 days, although 4-5 days would be better. You will also need a reasonable size boat, enough to be comfortable on for the length of stay. For those without a boat of their own (ie. me), there are several places that they can be hired. Houseboats are perfect for the area, although yachts and the like can also be hired. Make sure that you book ahead.

Highlights.
Getting woken up at 6 o’clock in the morning by my wife yelling because she was catching a fish, could rate as a highlight of my trip. Perhaps not. However the sumptuous fish breakfast that followed is worthy of a mention.

During our stay we caught 2 large fish (the 45 cm one of my wife’s and a 60 cm one caught the day before – neither by me). However it isn’t the greatest fishing spot in the world, and one does get the feeling that it may have been fished out a little.

One of the other things I enjoyed was walking across Fraser Island
to swim in the surf on the other side. While this is only possible at the southern tip of the island (and is not recommended unless you are good in the surf), there is almost no better way to wake up in the morning.

Bad Points.
The main bad point is that apart from fishing, there really isn’t anything else to entertain unless you bring it yourself. Those with small children may find themselves pushed for ways to keep them entertained.

Conclusion.
Tin Can Bay is one of those spots that’s great for getting away from it all. Watching the sun set and knowing that there is nothing that “I have to get done tonight”.
