Trinidad & TobagoNewest Review: ... is a small, boutique hotel with its own beach. It was incredibly popular with film stars in the fifties (Rita Hayworth stayed there, and even filmed a film there!). It fell into disrepair during the seventies but was then purchased and lovingly restored, and is now widely regarded as one of the best hotels in Tobago. Each room looks out over the sea. Rooms are large, comfortable and come with ... more |

Please note this is a very long review, but I hope it is worth reading! I got married in August to the lovely woman of my dreams, and decided to plan a surprise honeymoon for the pair of us. We both love the outdoors and adventure, preferring holidays that allow us to experience new cultures, and see wonderful new things. We aren't big fans of city holidays, so after doing a bit of research, I though that Tobago, with its wonderful mix of beaches, rainforest and Caribbean culture, would be ideal. A little about Trinidad and Tobago: The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago comprises of two islands in the Southern Caribbean. Trinidad is the larger and ... Read the complete review

All Caribbean islands are beautiful, but there's something different about Tobago. I have been to a couple of the islands and I have to say Tobago is now firmly in my planted in my soul. I loved the island, the people and the perfect weather. Walking on the beach you really do expect to turn a corner a meet Man Friday...the island is perfect and beautiful and any stress you arrived with will be washed away in the warm Caribbean Sea. I travelled to Tobago a couple of years ago with my husband and two children. My children loved the holiday. We stayed at the "Rex Turtle Hotel" and we had a ground floor apartment with a patio leading directly onto the ... Read the complete review

I am lucky in that I have family who live out in both Islands, so have experienced life from both tourist and (sort of) local. The two are needlessly to say completely different. Please don't let this review put you off; the advice here can be applied to many of the caribbean islands, just that I've been here so many times, i know all the pitfalls and where-with-alls. Trini is fast (for a caribbean island), can be dangerous and more cosmopolitan than it's sister Island. There are lots of problems with drugs/gangs in certain parts. Certain parts near PoS on the highway are to be watched -especially near the shanty town where if you break down you ... Read the complete review

I was warned about so many things about these islands as well as being told some positive things and the result of my stay was that I found evidence to support almost every warning and positive feature. These islands are a country of contrasts and contradictions. There is evidence of positive and harmoniois multi-racial living; yet the tension that exists among and between the various communities are also obvious. As a "tourist" you are given all sorts of special priviledges and deferments but this will happen at the same time as they rip you off. It was an enjoyable stay and as a Black Briton, there are obviously advantages for me. You can enjoy the climate, ... Read the complete review

I was lucky enough to work in Trini for a while so here is a slightly different point of view: The pace of life is relaxed and slow - great for Maracas beach and lymin' but not when you're next pay check is on the line. It can be very frustrating. Having said that if like it, you'll love it. Trinidad is wet in the rainy season (!) and gets very humid. Make sure your office is air conditioned and drink at least 2 ltres of water a day. If you're in Port of Spain be a bit careful what you wear. White people in suits are still not especially welcome in the poorer districts. It is not unknown for white houses to be stoned. But ... Read the complete review
