I am quite well travelled but one place that is definately not on my list for a re visit is Tunisia. I had the misfortune to travel there two years ago with my family and have spent the last two years trying to put off as many people as I can from going. Where do I start? The Hotel, quite expensive, on the beach front at Hammamet, all marble, chandeliers and indoor fountains, fabulous I thought, until the smell hit me. That was from the public "Toilet" in the foyer, the filth in there was beyond description. Shopkeepers, were so rude and insistant,a man out of our hotel was locked in a carpet shop until he signed for a carpet using his Access card, they were really very frightening. The break in, after two days of being there out hotel room was broken into, all my sons clothes were stolen, camera equipment, duty free and toiletries were gone, the receptionist said Tunisian people dont steel, it must be one of the British holidays makers. The police, waiting in the police station was perhaps the worst hour of my life, it was like a scene from Midnight Express.A young boy brought in for pick pocketing was beaten and thrown out into the street. I could go on but I am depressing myself. I should have had a clue when we arrived, the fact that there were people sat with their cases in the foyer, pleading with the holiday rep to get them on a flight home, willing to pay anything just to get out of the place!
