I first visited Turkey 9 years ago & have since been back 18 times. I have been to most of the ressorts & visited Istanbul * Ankara. I didn't really like Istanbul:too busy & too many tourists. I love Ankara, the musuem of Central Anatolia is really interesting. I found the masouluem to Ataturk,Anit Kabir, moving.
Last year I caught the train from Ankara & visited Diyarbakir, Batman, Hassenkeyf & Van. I was on the train for 26 hours. I like Turkish trains even thought they are slow. I took fruit & wine. The train stops about every two hours & you can get off & buy fresh bread & cheese. Diyarkabir is like a wild-west town, overrun with children. I believe the norm is 12. From Diyarkabir I visited Hassnkeyf, a pretty village on the Tigris which was going to be flooded. (I think Hassenkeyf will be ok now because british civil engineers have withdrawn from the project.) From Diyarkabir I caught the bus to Van. There were many military searches, I don't know whether they were looking for guns or drugs. I really liked Van & thought Lake Van great. Carpets & jewellery were much cheaper there than in western Turkey. This year I am off to Turkey again.
