~**~* My Time In This City ~**~* There are already two reviews for this city on the site, and I do not want to discredit them, so I will try not to give a repeat on the statistics of the city etc. This review is about when I lived and worked in the area for five weeks. Arriving in Turku a couple of days early for another music festival, we had a bit of time to explore the city. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is also an area where Swedish is currently spoken, meaning most signs are in both Finnish and Swedish which can be a little confusing to start with. One of the first attractions we had to visit whilst in Turku was the castle. A large medieval structure, on first sight it didn't exact look like what I associate with the term 'castle', it is far better preserved than many of the ruins or older castles we have here. Turku is Finland's 3rd largest city, but really its got the feel of a small town. I sepent a couple of days there last summer and the experience was a mixed one. Turku is the complete anti-thesis of Helsinki. Where it can be said that Helsinki is an inriguing mix of the old and the new, of Russian and Finnish, Turku seems somewhat more uniform, and certainly more resolutely historical. Turku happens to be the oldest city in Finland, and there is plenty of interest there historically. Turku castle is a particularly good afternoon out.
