Just up the coast is the resort of Zlatni Pyazatsi (Golden Sands), which in the Cold War was where East Germany went on holiday but which is steadily reinventing itself as a Med style resort. Varna is a good base to see the surrounding area (which includes ruined former capitals and the Romanian Royal Summer Palace from the inter war years (now in Bulgaria), and at the same time is a goood place to relax on the beach or in a cafe. Varna is a pleasant city, situated on the Black Sea Coast of Bulgaria. It is clean and has a number of good museums. It bustles with life, with shops, with street traders, and even has a good cinema! The beaches are nice and clean, and there are good rail / bus links to surrounding locations of interest.
