Advantages: lots to do, lots of history,

Disadvantages: Venice is pretty much just tourists now

I visited Venice earlier this year and I had very mixed feelings about it.
Being in Venice was wonderful because it is a city that has such a rich history and there is so much to see. In many ways it's like being in a big museum, everything has some kind of historical significance and the whole experience is completely unique. I love travelling by boat and walking so Venice was perfect for me.There are of course no cars, instead you travel to places on the canals or by walking, everything is in walking distance. You can spend days getting lost in all of the little streets, looking in the shops and eating in the restaurants.
There are so many sights to see and so many museums to visit. If you do decide to go around the museums, which I would highly recommend if like me you enjoy learning about the history of a place, be sure to buy a pass that gets you into more than one museum as they can be quite expensive and if you're student don't forget your student card.
However, there is a certain sadness to Venice. Many of the natives have left and the majority of people there are tourists. It made me a little bit sad to learn of how great Venice had once been and then see it reduced to little more than a tourist trap.

Summary: Visiting Venice is an enjoyable experience but Venice has an underlying melancholy
