Advantages: Beautiful and full of culture and history

Disadvantages: Expensive!

Me and my girlfriend decided that in April we would head to Venice as Rome would be too busy with it being Easter and all.

We flew with EasyJet from East Midlands Airport to Venice Marco Polo airport, the flight is relatively short and we found the Venetian airport to be very charming.

Once you have got your baggage i you plan to stay on the mainland then you will either need to take the Alliguna (water bus) or a private water taxi, a return ticket on the Alliguna costs around Euro25 for a return ticket and is far cheaper than hiring a private water taxi. Make sure you know which coloured route you need in order to get to your hotel otherwise you could end up having a long walk!

Once we arrived we found that as expected a lot of resturaunts in Venice are very expensive in terms of what you get for your money. To try and save money we made some sandwhiches with the things provided with our Bed and Breakfast and only bought drinks because in Venice, EVERYTHING costs money, even to use a public toilet will cost Euro1,50. If you do want to buy any food or snacks there are plenty of delicatessants around and there are also a couple of supermarkets that provide good value for things such as drinks and sweets.

Eating out is very expensive in Venice so a meal for 2 people in the evening is going to cost at least Euro60 when drinks and everything else have been taken into account.

In terms of what to see there are lots of boutique type shops for those who can afford to splash the cash with many popular designers having their own stores, obviously San Marco (St Mark's square) and the basillica are places you cannot goto Venice and not experience. For a small fee you can goto the top of the basillica and look out over the square and is deffinately something I would recommend. The Rialto bridge is worth a half day too, other than that I would recommend just going for a walk and seeing where it takes you, if you see any gellataria stores about don't forget to stop and try their tasty ice creams!

Pros: Beautiful place, nice resturaunts, all the walking keeps you healthy.

Cons: It is very expensive (we spent over 100 euros a day!), there are lots of african immigrant street sellers there.

Overall I cannot reccommend going to Venice enough and is ideal for a 3 or 4 day break.

Summary: Go there for a weekend break.
