WarsawNewest Review: ... the Saxon Gardens it is a short walk to the Old Town. Called the Old town this part of Warsaw is a whole 40 years old. The old 'Old Town' was completely levelled by the Germans. The new 'Old Town' is a brick by brick reconstruction. Most of the work was done at a cost to locals and Poles from across the country who wanted to see this iconic part of Warsaw back to its former glory. Much ... more |

I arrived in Warsaw, the 2nd of my former Eastern block cities, having taken the first train from Krakow. The journey lasting 4 hours passes through the green flat central region of Poland. Costing about 30zl (exchange rate at time of travelling £1 = £4.8zk) the train left and arrived bang on time. The trains final destination was Moscow. Travelling alone I made a very conscious decision not to fall asleep as turning up in Moscow without a visa could have caused me issues. Arriving at Warsaw central station I immediately knew I was in for a different perspective of Poland. Krakow is a small city with a real tourist heart and feel. Warsaw is an entirely ... Warsaw Part 1 - Old Town As I have reviewed the Old Town of Krakow I think it only appropriate that I review Warsaw's Old Town, seeing that I live only 15 mins away and often catch the 13 or 23 tram to the Stare Mesto which stops outside my apartment block. Autumn and Winter are my favourite times to visit; all the visitors have gone and a serenity envelopes the brick walls, walkways, main square and cobbled streets of this immaculate Old Town. After the war the town was totally destroyed, buried under twenty million cubic metres of rubble it resembled a shattered shell; over half the population had been killed, and 85% of the city raised to the ... ====INTRODUCTION ==== Warsaw is the capital of Poland, in Central Europe. Poland has suffered from its neighbours throughout its history, and Warsaw is the classic symbol of this, having been reduced to a heap of rubble by the vengeful Nazis in 1944. Today it is the thriving capital of a member state of the European Union (Poland joined on 1 May 2004), a city of around 2m people on the banks of the Vistula river, benefiting from the transition from Communism to a market economy to such an extent that its GDP is 137% of the EU average (the average figure for the UK is 123% to give a benchmark) - although the figure for the rest of Poland is way below the EU ... I went To Warsaw last week January 8th 2004 to January 16th 2004. It was an odd adventure that quickly exploded out of hand but I have survived to tell about it. My friend e-mailed me last week and told me to meet him in Warsaw, that a bunch of us mexicans would go there and raise hell. So I bought a ticket and went the next day. I knew absolutely nothing about Poland or Warsaw. I am vaguely aware that my mother's family was from land that is now in Poland but I did not care. I can heartedly recommend my hotel. It was called something like Gnoscienec and it is by a huge new wonderful Mall called Galleria Molotow on Rzyszemseski street sort of ... Read the complete review

'The ugliest capital in Europe, all grey communist era concrete blocks', was how my neighbour on the flight to Warsaw described the city, proving that he'd never had the misfortune to go to Sofia, as we sniffed and poked suspiciously at the sweet and sour chicken that the airline had served up on an early morning flight from Heathrow. Minutes later the redfaced stewardess returned, grabbed the meal trays, explaining that this was the lunch for the return flight at midday, and bought us our real breakfast. I was relieved as sweet and sour chicken for breakfast did not seem an auspicious start to the trip. Neither did my neighbour's disparaging remarks ... Read the complete review
