Yangtze River

Description: The Yangtze River or Chang Jiang (Simplified Chinese: 长江; Traditional Chinese: 長江; pinyin: ... more
Yangtze River ... Cháng Jiāng) is the longest river in Asia and the fourth longest in the world after the Nile in Africa, the Amazon in South America, and the Mississippi-Missouri in the United States. The river is about 6,211 km long and flows from its source in Qinghai Province in western China, eastwards into the East China Sea. It has traditionally been considered a dividing point between northern and southern China, although geographers consider the Qinling-Huai River line to be the official line of geographical division. The river is navigable by oceangoing vessels for about 1000 km (about 600 mi) and steamers can travel as far as Yichang, 1600 km (1000 mi) from the sea. In addition to its importance as a transportation network, the Yangtze irrigates one of China's chief rice-growing areas.

Crowned Review Yangtze River: Up a Foggy River (3207 words)

Fourteen weary Jules Verne tourists climbed off the coach that had taken them from the city of Shanghai to the River Port of Zhenjang on the Yangtze to board their cruise ship the MV Victoria Rose and their eight night journey upstream along the Yangtze River in China ending at the river city of Chongqing. We shouldn't have been that weary. Six intriguing days and nights spent in Beijing and finally Shanghai had been fascinating. Our minds were full of the exciting images we'd seen. Our bodies were weary with the walking and climbing we'd done – but our weariness was more to do with a coach journey that should have taken three hours from Shanghai to the River Port. Crowned Review A dam good cruise (1997 words)

My trip to China included a three night cruise down the Yangtze River from Yichang to Chongqing. This is the stretch of the river that will be flooded in the next few years by the controversial dam currently under construction just outside Yichang. There are an enormous number of companies running tourist boats, and public transport boats along the river, and it's possible to go all the way to Shanghai from Yichang (and back) along the river. Tourist boats stop at locations deemed to be of tourist interest by the Chinese authorities, and usually include these excursions in the quoted price. I cruised along the river on the 'Snow Mountain', making ...  Read the complete review
