The square continues beyond the National Theatre but here it becomes less formal and there are lots more shady trees; this is a good place to sit in summer to get some relief from the sun - Zagreb is very hot in the summer months. Next you'll encounter the main square, Trg Bana Jelacica, but first you'll have to carefully cross the tram lines. The centrepiece of the square is the statue of King Tomislav but it's not nearly as impressive as the buildings around the square. The only downside is that some of the stores now have big s... more

A couple of weeks ago, to celebrate the auspicious occasion of my mother's birthday, we took my parents to Zagreb for the day. Of course, we set out from Slovenia so it wasn't the enormous undertaking that sounds. The Croatian capital is well worth a stay of at least a couple of days, but it also makes an excellent day trip and is a viable destination from the holiday resorts of Croatian Istria, the coastal towns and other places in Slovenia, Venice and Trieste in northern Italy and the Plitvice Lakes in northern Croatia. I wouldn't recommend it as a day trip for people staying further south in Croatia as distances take longer to cover in this part of Europe. The train ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review The almighty capital (579 words)

Zagreb the wonderful capital of Croatia is one of my favourite European cities, cold in the winter and warm most of the rest of the year, it's a great place to spend afternoons outside the cafes and bars that line the cobbled streets. The city which has become popular with tourists in recent years has seen numerous budget options pop up in the form of hostels and the days of having to stay in the dour HI hostel nicknamed "The Prison Hostel" for its miserable staff and lack of light has long gone. To compliment the wonderful choice of places to wine and dine is a fine selection of magnificent buildings and statues from the stunning National Theatre ...  Read the complete review

Crowned Review Zagreb: Bog standard capital city? (1490 words)

The title might sound less than complimentary, but there is a reason for this, namely that “Bog!” is an everyday Croatian term meaning “Hello!”. If you are worried that a lack of Croatian might be something that will deter you from visiting Zagreb, then a vague knowledge of German will stand you in very good stead. Speaking German I found that I was at least able to talk to people, even if only to exchange pleasantries. Zagreb, Croatia’s capital is a hidden gem, in fact much of Croatia is, with a lot of the tourists having been deterred from visiting the country since the war with Serbia. I first visited Croatia in February 1998, ...  Read the complete review

Zagreb A Capital City (142 words)

I stayed in Zagreb for three night and this city has a lot to offer. The architecture in the older part of the city particularly the churches is stunning. There is a very cheap 'tram' system which runs from 4am to 2am daily which although old is well established and would be the envy of many City in the UK. They have an excellent large modern concert hall which hosts many large events, normally with a classical lilt. About an hours drive from the City are the National Park and the Plitzvic Lakes these are one of the wonders of the world with lakes and waterfalls -well worth a visit and you can spend a day walking around them - a delight for walkers. ...  Read the complete review
