The name, like all similar names ending in -nthos, is pre-Mycenaean or Pelasgian in origin. Zakynthos has a thriving tourism industry and is one of the top tourist destinations in Greece.

I went to Tsilivi, Zante in the beginning of July 2008. This was my very first time abroad so i can't be too critical. I stayed in the planos apartments, which were basic. The cleaner's were brilliant, but to be honest the facilities were simple, small bar, a few sofa's and a tiny often over crowded swimming pool, but if your after a holiday were your out and about most of the day it's perfect. Although you had to pay extra for air conditioning and a safe key, which i think should come with it. I had not even heard of Zante before we booked our holiday there so had no expectations. Zante, or Zakynthos as it is also known, is the third largest of Greece's Ionian Islands, after Kefalonia and Corfu. Corfu we had visited many, many years ago and remembered it as a bit of a party island. Now, years later, we were looking for a quieter time. Zante is shaped a bit like an arrow-head, pointing roughly north-west. The western coastline is somewhat wild and rugged and features no beaches of any serious nature. This is because the mountainous spine of the island runs the length of this side of the island, leaving the eastern side as the most populous. ...

Express Review on Zante (Zakynthos)

We arrived in zante airport on a thursday afternoon. Weather was great. The olny bad thin was that the thomas cook reps didnt have a clue what coach we was ment to be on. we finaly got on coach to our hotel to find out that the driver didnt even know where our hotel was and the rep decided she was to busy to get on our coach. we finaly found our hotel no help to driver or rep. The rest of the holiday was great. could not fault it. My only Regret is flying with thomas cook airlines. we plan to go back next year but without the hastle of unreliable reps. oh yeah just a warning on your return flight. make sure you pack a pact lunch and plenty of water as the airport is VERY EXPENSIVE 16 EURO FOR 2 SANDWICHES AND A VERY LONG WAIT.
