Kalamaki - Ideal for couples / young families (Zante (Zakynthos))

Advantages: Peaceful, lots of bars / restaurants, Friendly locals

Disadvantages: need to go between middle of may and middle of september to guarantee weather

My Fiancee and I have been to Zakynthos 3 times now. Each time to the resort of Kalamaki, once for a fortnight and twice for a week.

Neither of us have a bad word to say about Kalamaki or the island of Zakynthos.

The first time we went we stumbled across 'the world famous' mermaids restaurant, ate in their the first night and have eaten every meal (breakfast and dinner) in there every day we spent in Zakynthos over the 3 trips. We should perhaps try some other places, but the food is so good, served in ENORMOUS portions with friendly helpful, fun staff.

We then always proceed to the bar next, Plus Soda which is also owned by the owner of Mermaids, Con. He must have a policy of only hiring staff who are fun and friendly as the high level of service we got in Mermaids was again on offer in Plus Soda. The bar is very english with quiz nights, Karaoke and live sports on offer.
Although Kalamaki has an abundance of bars and restaurants there is always a relaxed atmosphere wherever you go, whether this as something to do with the resort being mainly couples or young families I don't know, but the lack of groups of lads and lasses, more accustomed to Laganas 10 mins down the road, will definately have something to do with this.

There are many shops on the main road in Kalamaki which sell the essentials you may forget e.g. Suncream, beach towels, insecy repellent but they also sell a wide range of locally made jewellery which we never fail to come away from Zante without.

We haven't been to kalamaki for 2 years now due to getting our own house, and a week doesn't go by without looking for a cheap deal so we can go back to our favourite holiday destination.

We have made it our aim for next year to have AT LEAST 2 weeks there.
