Take a wander away from the resorts to find some real island treasure! (Zante (Zakynthos))
Member Name: MistyClaire
Advantages: Secluded coves, hilltop tavernas, fantastic weather, views towards Kefalonia Disadvantages: the main resorts are very busy
Zakynthos has a reputation for being a Greek party island with the main resort of Laganas growing in popularity amongst the 18-30 cheap holiday market. However, do not be fooled! If you care to venture around the rest of the island, there is as many quiet fishing harbours and quaint seafront and hillside tavernas as the next island. Away from the club-rep scene of the main resorts, there are tranquil beauty spots and small relaxing Greek villages to sample the traditional Mediterranean cuisine, and dance away the evening to Greek music with visitors and locals. The main town (Zakynthos Town) is a great place to eat and drink, with many restaurants and bars around the small stone streets and picturesque squares. There are many designer boutiques with international and local designers for those of you with a few bob to spare, for everyone else there are many shops selling good quality Greek leather goods and pottery for souvenirs. A day boat trip around the island gives you access to outstanding areas such as Shipwreck cove and the blue caves, just make sure you don't go on one of the round the island party cruises! (Unless you want to be sandwiched between countless sweaty 20somethings listening to Cascada at full volume whilst being splashed with cheap larger!) Summary: Highly recommended to smaple authentic Greek life on a budget, just get away from the main resorts |
