Advantages: lots to do

Disadvantages: none

I've lived next to Dartmoor my entire life, but I still love it. What is it? It's nearly 1000 square kilometers of moorland in Devon, all protected by National Park status.

Since this is my review, and not a guide-book, let me just tell you my seven favourite things to do here.

1) Crapstone - this huge rock is surrounded by open land that is ideal for learning how to drive (that's what it's famous for). However, we used to drive up here and play tennis. The short grass was as tidy as a tennis court, although the sheep dung was an extra.

2) Play horsey- there are lots of wild animals on Dartmoor, and the horses are great. We often approach and stroke them, but be careful - they will bite you if they fancy it. I tried Join Up with them and it worked (see the Monty Roberts horse whispering books.

3) Swim in the rivers - there are lots of rivers on the Moor, and they are freezing but fresh. Of particular note is Cadover bridge, a lovely swimming spot always adorned with an ice-cream van in the summer.

4) Sex - yes, there are lots of quiet spots for sex on the moor. Many people go up there for that, so don't approach a seemingly isolated car; it's not a dogging spot!

5) Pubs - there are some great pubs, such as the Skylark, but be prepared to pay a lot. The surroundings are great, but you pay for it.

6) Tors - Ten Tors is held up here, and you can climb to your heart's content. Just be careful not to go too far - usual safety cautions apply.

7) A nice drive - drive off and keep turning randomly here and there for half an hour and you're likely to find a lovely spot to have a picnic of try some of the aforementioned ideas!

Summary: do it
