Hello everyone and welcome to this review.
Well... Unfortunately my old HP laptop had reached the end of its life; it was time to get a new one. Im surprised that it lasted as long as it did considering the amount of times I drop my laptops. After researching on the web for a while I got a bit confused, there were so many laptops available and there were many good and bad reviews on each, I really did not know what to think. So, a trip to Comet was in order, I just wanted to pick one that looked nice and had okay features. If it was bad I always had the 28 day Comet return policy available, after all I would only lose around £10 for a repacking fee if the laptop was not for me. I would just have to make sure I don't drop it!
To Comet I went and right at the front of the store was an advertisement of a net book. It was of course the Acer. It was on special offer of only £199 and included a free 8GB memory expansion card. At first I thought it was too small, but for the price I couldn't go wrong, even if I used it just for travelling and college. So off I went and had the last one left in stock. It looked really cute because of its size and was a metallic blue color, I had to have it!
What is a Net Book?
Well, a Net Book is a really compact laptop designed mainly for use on the internet. They are really small so they are easy to travel with but still have a decently sized screen for ease of use. Net Books are not designed for gaming but will easily handle everyday tasks such as word processing and drawing of course. They also generally have a longer battery life than most laptops due to smaller components such as the screen and no CD-Rom drive. Basically a net book will do evrything your normal computer would do but is made very portable.
A net book can be used with any internet connection a normal laptop could use. I use mine on WiFi and pages are loaded really quickly, downloads are also very fast and streaming videos and music is amazing. Faster than my old laptop.
Well, it was opening time; the box was minute, just as I expected being such a little machine. But inside I found quite a lot. Inside was;
The lovely Blue Net book
A small protection sleeve (For keeping your net book protected)
A battery and also some leaflets that I never bother reading.
The net book was very easy to set up, it was ready charged and all I had to do was go through the Windows setup wizard. This was quite easy but it took 30 minutes, usually it only takes 10 minutes, not sure why it took so long. But once set up was complete it was quite evident just how quick it was.
Net books specifications:
I went for the Acer that was on offer so the specs are not the best available in the range but are perfect for me.
1GB of RAM
1.6GHZ Atom Processor
8GB hardrive plus an extra 8GB on a memory stick
The extra memory is easily installed into the side of the net book, there is a slot specifically designed for adding extra memory. It will only accept SD card so no others can be used as extra memory however there is another slot that accepts many other cards which I will explain later on.
I chose to run mine on Windows XP as I was very familiar with that operating system, there was also a Linux version available for £20 less, but I was not sure if I would get used to the new layout so I stuck with my good old faithful Windows XP, even though it is a pain at times.
Now when I opened this beauty up I realised just how many features it had!
*Built in webcam - For use on MSN messenger and other face to face chat software, also for taking snaps of yourself or surroundings. A decent VGA Camera.
*Built in microphone - Also for use on MSN messenger, for video calls and for recording sound.
*Built in speakers - Obviously for playing sound, I was surprised this had speaker s considering the small size; they are also of great quality.
*Touchpad - Most laptops have touchpads but this also has a mini one built in, its surprisingly easy to use
*Super Bright quality screen - A nice 8.9 inch screen with fantastic definition and scrisp display.
*Built in card reader - Reads many cards such as SD and pro for easy picture transfer or any other file in fact - accepts upto a 30GB SDHD card.
*Three USB ports - I was really surprised this had three ports, considering the size this is fantastic.
*Ethernet port - For connecting devices via Ethernet, such as internet connections and game consoles.
*Built in Wi-Fi Wireless adaptor.
Unfortunately considering all of those great features this net book has, it is missing one crucial piece of hardware. That being the CD- Rom / DVD drive, for many people this may be an inconvenience but I hardly ever use them anyway, but it would have been nice! External drives are easily available for around £10 on eBay. Not a bad price at all.
Do not be fooled by this net books small size, it has a load of power. The intel Atom processor is designed for net books and travel, but it is really powerful. All applications are loaded almost instantly and it hardly ever freezes. I admit that it can take 5 minutes to warm up from start up, however I never switch it off; I just close the lid when finished. When I want to use it I just flip it up and away it goes!
Does this net book really not play games?
Well, the man in Comet did tell me there was no chance of playing games on these and that I would have to pay an extra £300 for a laptop that did. To be honest I think they were trying to overcharge me as this little machine plays online games perfectly! I have tested Runescape with no problems at all, also Flight Simulator 2002 that I loaded onto the hardrive, plays both with no problems at all.
At first I was worried about the battery life due to the batteries very small size, I was wrong to worry as it lasts very well. When using on the internet via Wi-Fi I get around 3 hours of use, maybe slightly under at times, when using for word processing I get around 3 and a half. Not bad at all, extra batteries are available on eBay but are more expensive than most at around £49.
Now being such a small size you may be wondering, does the keyboard suffer? Well I must say it does not too much. The keys are nicely spaced out and have all of the necessary buttons needed in your daily computing lives. To save space Acer have removed the number pad usually found of the right of the keyboard, this is no problem as they still have the numbers above the letters. All buttons on the keyboard are easy to press and feel very strong so I think they shall be lasting a very long time. I have used Acer laptops before and was very unimpressed with the keyboards but they have really got it spot on with this net book.
The net book also came with a 3 month free Mcafee protection and a 30 day trial of Microsoft Office 2007. I have used both and they run really well on the net book.
This is a really great net book; it runs super fast with the Atom processor and has a great battery life. The keyboard is easy to use and looks a lot easier to use compared to other net books I have seen. Many extra features make this laptop very appealing and are all useful. The net book is also very light and easy to move around, great for travel.
I hope this has been useful, thank you for reading,
Summary: A really fantatsic net book that I would recommend to anyone.
