Advantages: Everything in 1 small package, XP comes with it!!
Disadvantages: Speakers are poorly positioned
I bought 3 of these for various family members just over a year ago and we all have been very impressed. There are newer more expensive models out there but they dont add a lot over this one. It has everything I need: very portable, nice HDD size (160gb), built in wireless, bluetooth connectivity to my phone and if I treat the battery right then it lasts around 5 hours.
You have a choice of four colours - all black, blue with a black keyboard, all white and pink. The pink is the same as the white except the lid is pink. This was apparently done as a limited edition valentines day edition in 2009 so is a little hard to find these days.
You will find all your sockets around the sides of the laptop: left has 2 usbs slots, a network port and slot for the power cable. The right side has the power button, vga socket, another usb socket and a point each for headphones and microphone. The front of the laptop just has the power lights and on the underside the speakers. This can mean that when you have the laptop on your lap you muffle the speakers a bit. They are not overloud either so for me this is the biggest downside although you should not let that put you off. You will find something called 'Enhanced Sound' in the system tray that allows you to increase the volume....however it does it at the expense of sound quality and to be honest music and films really do sound dreadful when you have it turned on.
The back of the laptop houses the battery - be very careful when you purchase one of these as they come with different batteries and not all companies tell you which battery it comes with. I bought my laptop for £280 from Amazon last year and thought I could save £30 by buying one for my dad from another site. Little did I realise that while mine came with a 5hr battery the one I bought for my dad only lasted 1hr30. It is about £60 to buy the 5hr battery so it's not a cheap mistake to make! The longer lasting battery does make the netbook heavier than other brands but it is not enough to make it a problem.
On the underside you can slot in the memory. The cover is a nightmare to get off and it feels like you are going to break it but eventually it will come away to reveal the 1gb memory card. I found that this was not good enough as the laptops performance when I tried to multitask was sluggish. I spent £25 to buy a 2gb card and have been very happy with it.
Opening up the laptop you will notice that the keyboard is much larger than standard notebooks. I am told it is 90% of the size of a standard keyboard and I do find it easy to type on. I especially love the pg up and pg dn buttons in the bottom right next to the cursor keys. You soon get used to them being there and will wonder why every keyboard is not like that!
There is no mouse joystick in the centre of the keyboard rather you have a mouse pad with a scroll bar going up and down the right hand side of it. While this may be a good idea, in practice I find it irritating. I will often send the page scrolling rapidly out of control when I accidentally brush against it.
The screen is of good quality - perfect for watching films if you don't mind the small screen but it is a touch small for using with excel. You find you cant get many cells on the page at any one time so you spend all your time scrolling left and right and up and down (I suppose this is going to be the same with any 10 inch netbook though)
Just above the screen you will find the webcam. This is of decent quality although the colours are not the sharpest. Where it does fall down though is with the sound. I have used 3 of these netbooks and every one is the same. The other person can hear you just fine but then without warning they will not be able to hear you for around 30 seconds. They start to hear you again and then 5 minutes later the sound goes again.
This comes with Windows XP home edition which I was very happy with as it is the operating system I am most familiar with. The samsung software that comes with it is good, although I have no idea what all the updates they give me are - seems to download lots of updates to the network card without making a blind bit of difference! You will find all kinds of goodies in the Samsung windows shortcut: a battery manager that allows you to configure the battery for performance or for long life time,. a recovery tool, network manager etc etc. It's best to have a play around with these at the start, set your laptop up as you want it and then leave it alone
I am absolutely delighted with my Nc10 and cannot sing its praises enought. I take it everywhere with me and it has never let me down. I have not had one system crash in all the time I have owned it and despite some bashing around in suitcases and on the floor of my car it still looks as good as new.
