The Intel PRO/1000 T IP Storage Adapter installs in a network-attached server and offloads TCP/IP and iSCSI processing to the on-board Intel 80200 processor based on the Intel XScale microarchitecture. The adapter supports standard protocols like Ethernet and TCP/IP, allowing interoperability and reducing the need for specialized personnel.

iSCSI is an IETF draft standard that enables TCP/IP to be used in storage networks allowing for re-use of standard Ethernet cabling, equipment and management tools. This eliminates the expense of specialized Fiber Channel infrastructure and support staff. iSCSI also reduces the distance restrictions associated with traditional SANs since the protocol can be transmitted over the global TCP/IP network.
