“ NETGEAR SC101 Storage Central - NAS - IDE/ATA - RAID 1 - Ethernet 10/100 „
This product is rubbish. Check out the number of software and firmware updates that have been provided by Netgear to try and resolve the numerous issues that surround this product. I now use it as a large paperweight for which it is better suited.
It just does NOT work.
Don't touch this product, look on Ebay and see how many are for sale.
One thing they don't mention in the adverts is that this device uses its own filing system.
If the device fails you cannot take the drives out and pop them into you PC - your PC just would not recognise them.
Unless you have a spare device, if you value your data, you would have to buy another - in other words - YOU'RE HOOKED !!!
It is not compatible with some firewalls such as Zone Alarm.
I wasted two weekends trying to get this device working.
It installed okay, and it managed to update its firmware and software.I then managed to copy 129 GB to the device, which it did ever so slowly (took over A DAY to complete).
Once I had rebooted, despite all my efforts, uninstalling, (even the uninstall program crashed - causing a reboot) and re-installing, my computer never "saw" the drives again.
Netgear support were appalling.
Firstly, merely quoting paragraphs from their knowledgebase, wasn't much help.
After two weeks of emails, all help dried up, they eventually just ignored my case.
On the market for over a year this is still a problematic and unfinished product. I added 2 300GB Maxtors in mirrored RAID to mine.
Initially it worked but made all my wi-fi PCs slow to boot, gave slow data transfer and added a minute to boot times as the PCs tried to find the unit on the network. My one wired PC was quicker.
With passive heating the top of the unit can become too hot to rest one's hand on.
The unit uses DHCP and uses two IPs per drive. Drive letters assigned may not stay the same.
Netgear recently put out a new software/firmware upgrade that has throughly broken the unit - and now Netgear has withdrawn the upgrade; downgrading is not an options so I'll be looking for a new, different, NAS solution.
