The MyBook is another device from the renowed Western Digital folks. These are quite popular and found in many high street shops like Dixons, Currys and the Apple shop. The point of this drive is you plug it into your router and you then have easy access to another drive with a huge capacity to store files on, such as your documents, pictures, music and videos. You can use it as a backup drive, or just for additional storage. The real place this drive becomes useful is as a media server. This means you put your photos, music and video in to the relevant named folders and you can then access them via your pc, laptop, ps3 or other compatible device that can stream from a media server! How cool is that? So you can stick all your media in one place and share it all over your house! You can even register for Mionet and access it across the web!
The media server installed is Twonky which is a well known and established one, and works well with most devices. My only complaint is the lack of ability to upgrade the Twonky version and new versions are released. You have to wait for a whole new MyBook firmware upgrade, and these don't seem to come out that often.
The drive is quick enough to use and will be ample space for the average persons needs, but if you are looking for a high end device for streaming big HD quality video to multiple devices or need super fast access to your content on it, then you might want to look elsewhere. This is not a top end drive, it's for the average user.
The MyBook World Edition is a network storage device for home users, allowing you to access it's contents from several computers and other network devices. This model offers 1TB of space at a good value price compared to some of the competing devices. It is easy to set up by simply connecting to your router and using the supplied CD in a PC to do some simple setup.
It is possible to do a lot more than simply save your files to it. The included backup software can be used to ensure the most important files on your PC are constantly backed up to the MyBook each time they are changed. You can also use it as a media server, so that devices such as the PS3 and others with UPNP/DLNA support can stream movies, music and photos from it.
There is also a remote access feature so you can login to a website and access your data from another location. You can even set it up to download files from websites or bittorrents so that you don't need to leave your PC on all day/night for large downloads!
Occassional software updates from Western Digital have improved the features available, but if you are adventurous, there is also information available online to help you install additional unofficial features. The unit does not appear to be designed to allow the drive to be changed by the user, but that probably won't concern the target user, and is only normally available on more expensive devices.
