Advantages: Supports Apple and comes in sensible disk sizes

Disadvantages: Very noisy and failed within a few weeks of having it

I was expecting this device to be very easy to setup (simple web-based interface) but instead it was quite clumsy in the end. Some of the web interface menus are very slow to refresh and the speed of the interface in general is suspect. I always noticed that the drive was very noisy, and would sometimes ramp up its fan for no apparant reason.

Eventually (as in a few weeks) it failed completely. The drive would spin down after about 10 minutes and never spin back up. I did an RMA and then refused the replacement as I felt the whole product quality was quite low.

The advatages are: support Apple (and other SAMBA based systems) and comes in a sensible disk sizes (160GB upwards).

I would seriously consider buying a different brand of this network storage type, but I have been put off from making it my first choice for storage solutions.

Summary: Very noisy and suffered from reliability problems.

In a way it's comforting to find someone else with a similar problem.

I was slightly more lucky... or was I? - since my Linkstation 250 failed after a few months, when I had really started to use it (after having got over other useability issues about usernames clashing with Domain users).

The fan just started going crazy - very loud - maybe some crud got in there? - and then the thing just stopped working one day and then refused to start up.

Very poor.

From your description I don't recognise that as the same device I'm using! I guess you must have got a rogue machine.
