A viable alternative to F1 World Grand Prix

If you've played N64, you'll be familiar with F1 World Grand Prix, that awesome game pretty much monopolised the market on the N64 for F1 related titles, constantly maintaining the highest ratings in magazines about a decade or so ago.

A game that I had the pleasure of playing recently but never bothered playing at the time was F1 Racing Championship which would undoubtedly be considered a pretty good game if it didn't have such strong competition.

From the start you notice that gameplay is not quite as easy as on F1 World Grand Prix, I used to just accelerate, fly through the field and somehow end up first, that's not possible in this game. It definitely requires a bit more technical ability, it's more realistic, if you find yourself spinning off the track then you'll undoubtedly find yourself down the pecking order too.

Once you get behind, it's not easy to catch up with the other cars, a fault on most racing games where you can make your way through the field with ease, the game doesn't quite have all the modes that F1 World Championship has and it does possess race modes that you wouldn't really find in F1 but the courses aren't bad (Sepang in Malaysia is also included) and the graphics are reasonable and without as far as I could see any glitches.

The sound effects are a bit limited and I fear that not having a mode that's exceptionally easy might have lowered its popularity but its a good game that will keep you busy and a pretty good alternative to F1 World Grand Prix.

      • "No replay option"

The game is very good, don't get me wrong. It's just that it doesnt have the same quality as F1 WGP. F1 WGP was a very hard act to follow, Videosystem get themselves involved again, but this time with Ubisoft. The manual is very good and tells you all you need, even car setup and how to drive in different parts of the tracks. The game starts and promts you if you would like to race Arcade or simulation style. This feature has been in Sega racing games and was also in Monaco GP, a game very similar in all but an official licence. In Arcade the car is easier to handle and will spin less on grass, it will also slow down easier, in simulation it is harder to stop and harder to turn, you will find yourself facing the wrong way more often too. F1RC IS official with all drivers and tracks from the '99 season, including the Malaysian track and the BAR team. In arcade there is a "Pick up and play" option that takes you through every track making objectives harder as you progress, for example you have to come in the top 6 on the easy tracks and win on the hardest ones. It is very much like playing it on a slot machine. In arcade there is also championship, single race and time attack options, as well as the 2 player, which only features 2 cars. 2 player is better on arcade than simulation. Scores of players can be saved in a league table. Simulation has all the same modes as arcade but with no pick up and play. Simulation has an extra mode called training, where you pick the track and you are then drive round whilest being told how fast to go, it indicates if you are going too fast or slow. The graphics are very good, very colorfull and nicely rounded off, the sound could be improved, as it is a little bit weedy for an f1 car. F1 WGP was exceptional in the sound department, is was true to life, as you could hear all the other cars on different parts of the track. There in no replay option,
which seems to be popular since WGP in 1998. There is a nice indicatr which tells you who is behined you in the race and how close they are. You dont have to be an F1 fan to like this game, its very good, but simulation mode will test the best gamers on the hardest level. Wait for the Nintendo GameCube for the perfect F1 sim but it's an excellent game all the same.

This game brings gameplay and graphics on the N64 to a higher level. It's a game, which you just can't afford to miss... You will regret it if you don't go and buy this game after you read this review! You've probably tried one of the F1 games on the N64. Well, you haven't played the best one yet! F1 Racing Championship (F1 RC) defeats the other games big time… And I'm not kidding! All teams, cars and circuits from '99 are available in this game: - The original 11 teams with drivers, including the newcomers in the competition - The original 22 cars, with the latest features of the '99 season - All 16 circuits, including Malaysia F1 RC has all the options a Simulation racing game needs: Single Race, Time Attack and Championship. The championship mode is a perfect copy of real-life racing. It even uses the real-time statistics. This game is also fun for the people who aren't very fond of Simulation, because there are also a couple of Arcade mode option… Guaranteed fun for everybody in the family. This racing game is not only packed with the standard options. It also features a new option never shown before in a F1 Racing game: School Mode! This interactive tutorial teaches you all the finest tricks in the business. The gameplay is better then I coud ever have wished for. The cars drive very smoothly in Arcade and Simulation mode. Although I must admit that I didn't get a very high rank in the simulation mode… I am more an Arcade kind of guy. I played other F1 games for the N64 before… but they never played as good as this one… F1 World Grand Prix comes close but not close enough. The graphics in this game are more than perfect. Because I played a nearly finished version, I don't know whether the Expansion Pack was already in use or not. With or without… the graphics of F1 RC are awesome. F1 RC has got a terrific frame rate
230;. And it wasn't even the final version I played! The cars are very detailed and match the original cars perfectly. But not only the cars match the real thing… The circuits are almost perfect. There is nothing missing with the sound of this game. Everything is there from Crowd Cheering to Realistic engine sounds! Nothing really to add here… There were no irritating and unrealistic sounds in the game. I even liked the midi soundtrack! This game is a great buy! Not only for simulation fans, but also for the Arcade fans. F1 RC will surely devastate all the other F1 games with its sublime graphics, gameplay and sound. If you want an awesome game then this is the game for you. I would definitely recommend buying it. Trust me, you won't go wrong with this one!
