Advantages: Everything

Disadvantages: Poor AI, controls take a bit of getting used to

Goldeneye is simply one of the best FPS games ever made, and stands as a towering achievement, as proof that videogame adaptations of films CAN be great. It is an extremely fun game both as a single player title and as a multiplayer one, although the latter forms the main attraction for sure.

Visually, this was a great game for its time, with well-rendered environments that still look decent contextually today. There are some glitches here and there, though, like enemies getting trapped in the environments, but by and large it's well designed and the style is great. Aurally it's also fantastic, with the soundtrack in particular being very befitting of a Bond game, and the gun sound effects are excellent.

It's the gameplay that makes it truly great, though, and it is a very slick, intuitive game throughout. The single player adapts the film well, putting you in all of the famous film sections, such as the well-known dam-jumping scene, and also the finale against 006 at the Cradle. The game isn't too hard and seasoned FPS players will breeze through it, but it is a lot of fun. The controls take a bit of getting used to but it's not a problem. One complaint though, is that the AI is dire, and they often won't notice you shoot their buddy that's right next to them.

The multiplayer is the defining experience, though, allowing you and three friends to play deathmatches on any map you want, playing as any character you want with any weapons. It puts many modern multiplayer games to shame and remains one of the most popular multiplayer titles today still. The maps - my favourite of which is Facility, which has those memorable toilets - are superbly well designed and make for some super-fun battles.

Undeniably the best game on the N64 (yes, far superior to the overrated Zelda), Goldeneye is a winning mix.

Summary: Sublime adaptation of the film
