Advantages: sniper's rifle
Disadvantages: being shot from behind
James Bond would really like being himself on N64. Usually in the films he only gets the chance to gracefully kill a few baddies. Here on N64 he gets the chance to put a couple of extra digits on his "have neutralised" total. As with the best games, at first I thought that this game was only average, with predictable scenarios and actions, but the more you play it the more features you discover. The graphics are excellent (as always on N64), and the detail is incredible. I once aimed a sniper rifle from a distant position on the ground, at a high up watch tower which had a glass surround to it. I fired, and the bullet went straight through and out the other side of the tower. Later when I scaled the watch tower to look for ammo, I noticed that my shot had left two holes in the glass, at precisely the correct angles of entry and exit - great detail! One amusing facet is the performance of 006. He really needs to buck his ideas up! No wonder James has to get most things done on his own. 006 usually fires a couple of shots at the baddies and then scarpers, leaving James to face up to a couple of platoons of baddies on his own. Another amusing aspect is the inclusion of neutral scientists, hostages and such like. The objective here is not to harm (kill) them. As you move amongst them they put their hands up as if to surrender. If you are really careful however, you can actually take a couple of shots at their hands, obviously giving them a bit of a nasty shock, and causing them to double up in agony for a couple of seconds, but then recover. There are only a couple of disappointing aspects to the game. Firstly the music can get a bit repetitive, although there are a couple of tension building moments to it. Secondly I was hoping that James would get between the sheets with a few fine femme fatales, but although I've not tried all the scenes yet, its beginning to look a bit doubtfull! There is a multipla
yer option which takes you to a "hunt each other down and kill" game which is quite amusing, but I think Golden Eye is best played in the one player mode. However overall, the point to the game is not to blunder about shooting wildly in a haphazard fashion. Patience and thought will get you further.
