Advantages: Great fun, You get to be Bond, 1st person shoot-em-up
Disadvantages: None
It really is that good! I came about this game as it came as part of the package when my brother got his N64 for Christmas a few years ago. Being the eldest I obviously got first go and became instantly hooked on the gameplay and graphics. I hadn't seen the film of this before I played the game but, now I've become a bit more familiar with both film and game, I've noticed how incredibly well the game's plot follows that of the film. The game: --------- You are Bond, super suave, sophisticated and exciting. You have to foil the antics of the cossack rebel Janus. The game begins, as does the film, with Bond going through the defences at the top of a HUGE dam. You have to bungee off this and get into the Russian chemical plant below in order to find your liason there. From there the game is concentrated on getting to Janus and killing him off. You have a lot to do to achieve this aim and will fight in a lot of different situations, from the frozen wastelands of Russia to Cuban rainforestsm each with different baddies coming after tyou and more and more interesting mission objectives, leading you, finally, to the fight on a huge satellite dish's cradle in Cuba. Controls/gameplay: ------------------ The game is set out as a first person shoot-em-up of the Doom genre, you only see the gun you're holding and whatever is in front of you. Controlling the game is quite tricky to begin with, you have the controller with the triger for your guns, moveing about is controlled by the thumb joystick and you can aim with the L and R buttons on top of the joypad. The aiming is awkward sometimes and, depending on the gun you're using, can really mess the game up for you. Zoom in aiming is a great idea but I prefer to use the auto-aim (cheater I know) as it saves a lot of stopping and starting. You can move crabwise left/right with the controller's diamond buttons and have a lot of f
un sneaking up on people this way. Each time you pause the game you will look at your watch (BOND'S WATCH! WOW) and can flip through your mission objectives and arsenal. Adds an extra bit of help when you're on a complicated mission. You soon get used to the controls and before long you're running about blasting all sorts of things away with your choice of gund, mines, missiles and grenades. You'll love the smoothness of the motion and the easy "Go anywhere" feel of the game. There is a choice of levels to go on. The beginning is "Agent", followed by "Special Agent" and finally "00 Agent" The levels basically add more to the mission objectives and start you off with less strength and fewer rounds for your gun. The addictiveness of the game is phenomonal, once you've completed the "Agent" level you'll begin again on the next one up, from there you're stuck forever as it is MUCH harder to master, after that you'll need to become Bond Master to go on for 00 training and mission. They get to be VERY hard and I've only completed the 1st level, dedication being my watchword though, I'm back on it again as soon as I get back for Christmas and I'll fill you in on progress in the new year! The further you get and the better you do in the game the more cheats and special features you get, this really makes for a lot of fun in the multiplayer games but, in my opinion, ruins the game. Multiplayer is simple: Split screen action, different scenarios - if it moves, kill it ( but watch your back!) - fun if you like that sort of thing, up to 4 people can play. Graphics/SFX: ------------- As with all N64 games, a bit jumpy and fuzzy once you get close up. They are great when you see things from afar but overall, not the world's best. When I was first into this game though they were the best graphics around, fantastic
to me and still quite charming really. Sound wise it is similar to the film, a lot of loud gun sounds (obviously) and clicks and clonks. Very realistic really for a game. You get little bits of footsteps to help you out and they have a nice little soundtrack to the game, again, follows that of the film. Overall: -------- I love this style of game, the baddies are stupid to begin with and get better and more cunning as you go through. The way in which the game follows the plot of the film is brilliant and it gets just as gripping. Updates from Q, M and Moneypenny come to you between levels and the whole thing feels great and really realistic. I'd reccomend this to any lover of the newer Bond film, you're Bond, what could be better?
