This is my opinion on the single player mode of Goldeneye - a game of such a high standard that I was shocked when I first found a flaw in it. It presents a series of mission levels - each (generally) set in a different location - coherently linked as part of a plot that loosely follows the film. You are started off gently, but the cleverly designed learning curve means most people can eventually have the satisfaction of skillfully completing the game on its most difficult setting. The special thing about this game is that once you have 'completed' it, you're still far from finished playing.

The next challenge is to go back to some of your previous missions and try to do them quickly enough to get a cheat. This adds a whole dimension to your play as you switch from stealth to speed. (Tip - some cheats are so hard to obtain that you should probably look up help in the form of instructions - from the web, say - and follow them; it's still a challenge though!)

"Then what?", you might ask. Well by now you will probably have a certain familiarity with the levels. So, switch on those cheats and have a good play around: make yourself invisible; shoot with deadly paintballs; put the baddies into slow motion. The possibilities are endless.
