I remember having the N64 as a kid, and this was the game all the family got involved in.
With 8 playable characters - Mario, Luigi, Toad, Yoshi, Peach, Wario, Donkey Kong and Bowser, each having different strengths and weaknesses, there was a decent selection to choose from, though you were bound to have a favourite!
There were 4 'cups' each with 4 race courses. Mushroom cup was the simplest, with the others being a bit more complex. You could also select the game difficultly - 50, 100, and 150cc. There was also a mirrored mode if you wanted to shake things up a bit.
The graphics were good for the time, and even today hold up - at least in the sense that it's purely a bit of family fun.
The gameplay was also good. A blue spiked shell would hit the player in the lead, allowing the others to catch up a bit.. And if used wisely could help at the very end, allowing the others to overtake before the finish line to steal a win, though of course if thus happened to you it was very frustrating.
Despite there being just 4 cups and 16 courses, it never felt repetitive, especially in multiplayer mode. The battle mode was a fun bonus too.
There were a few hidden cheats too. A certain ramp on the beach would take you few a cave, shaving a few seconds off your time. And on rainbow road if you drove off the edge at the right angle you'd skip a lot of the track. Wario stadium was another, being able to hop over the wall.
This was THE game of my childhood, and even today I sometimes pull out my N64 and fire some red shells into donkey kong's butt!
I still own this game and my N64. When I took on adult like responsibilities such as a mortgage and being a father, most of my gaming passion faded away and died. But not this one, and I'm glad to say my friends and I still get together once in a while and have a full night of karting bliss. Whether you're an older generation gamer in their 30's like me or one of the 'new breed' xBox Live generation, every game fan should have played this game at least once in their lives.
With 16 fantastic courses, phenomenal graphics (for it's time anyway), 8 splendidly playable characters and power-ups ahoy, this game is a gem as a standalone. However, it really comes to life when competing against 3 of your friends. There's nothing more satisfying than knocking your mates off-course with a well timed red shell or exploding through them with your invisibility star. This is one game that has truly stood the test of time. If you've never played it before then you need to up your game and find a copy online asap so you too can embrace the wonder that is Mario Kart 64. Failing that, if you only have 1 mate then the 2 player version on the SNES is an equally good investment. And if you used to own this in your youth but have since 'grown up' then shame on you - realise the error of your ways, give yourself a good talking to, and pick yourself up an N64 with this game. For the same cost of a night out at the pub with your mates you could all chip-in and do the right thing. Might even be some leftover cash for takeaway pizza. Or another game! Move over Gran Turismo and Need For Speed, its-a me-a, Mario! See you all at Ghost Valley!
I remember sitting hours playing this with my friends when I was younger. We used to obviously race the circuits, but also spend hours laughing and messing around in the battle and vs. modes.
You can play all your favourite nintendo characters such as mario, luigi, donkey kong, yoshi, princess peach, toad, bowser and many more! They all got different advantages and disadvantages, which you need to discover for yourself before you learn which one suits your driving style best.
The courses are very imaginative and colourful, making them great fun to drive. The mystery boxes you pick up as you drive are just genious. You can lay banana skids, bombs and all sorts of mischiefs for your opponents to crash into - great fun!
Also a lot of the courses have secret shortcuts that once you have found them, are ver valuable indeed as the computer controlled characters never use them.
You can choose how big engines you want to drive with and how difficult the computer charachters should be to beat - so start off easy then work your way up. Once you have completed all the tournaments on in all the different egine classes something interesting will happen.....
Also you can practice/set record times on the circuits when it´s just you driving. A good way to look for the secret shortcuts and get to master the course. If you do a brilliant lap, you can save the data and then next time you try - you can have your "ghost" racing against you, so if you beat the ghost - you have beaten your previous record.
Mario Kart has been made on the SNES, N64, DS and Wii, and Mario Kart 64 is definitely the best. The classic game is tense, crazy and can change in seconds, as you pick up weapons and shoot them at the other racers.
One of my favourite games as a child, Mario Kart 64 can be played by people of all ages, resulting in endless fun! As it is a 'retro' game now, it is probably rare, and might be expensive.
The gameplay is smooth - it's fairly simple, but effective. You can play this for ages, and not get bored, as no race is ever the same.
There are 16 courses, with 4 cups (4 courses in each cup). There are also 4 difficulty levels - 50cc, 100cc, 150cc and Mirror mode which is confusing at first!
This game is still hard to win on the hardest levels. I've played this recently with my friends (we're all 20) and it is so nostalgic! There is also battle mode, where you have 3 lives, and have to attack your friends and hit them with weapons.

Weapons can be obtained by driving into multicoloured boxes on the course. The people who are further to the back of the pack will get the better weapons, like a star, or lightning!
The music is also very catchy and speeds up on the last lap!
This game really is fantastic - and although these words are used, it is definitely a timeless classic.
I would recommend Mario Kart, it is simply superb, and has stood the test of time brilliantly.
Mario Kart is a popular title and as of yet I've never played the DS or Wii version but have indulged in both the N64 one and its SNES counterpart, although I prefer Diddy Kong Racing as a joyful racing game, this is definitely up there with it.
When I think of Nintendo in the 90s, this is the kind of great title, I think of. THe graphics are superb, the gaming is so fun and obviously whilst some racers will be better than others, the game does require a certain amount of luck due to how quickly it can propel you up or down the grid.
The courses are superb, ranging from busy highways through to dreamy chocolate and snow lands, they really have done an awesome job of creating some ideal worlds to drive in, there are 3 cups containing 4 different tracks of various difficulties to take part in and 8 characters to choose from the heavyweight Bowser to the light and somewhat difficult to steer Yoshi (he tends to lose grip around corners)
The courses always have a couple of things that you have to watch out for, ranging from trains and cars through to chocolate avalanches, dogs and giant moles (or are they gophers?), then there's your fellow drivers, Schumacher would love it as lots of foul play takes place, leaving bananas that will have your rivals spinning out or causing lightning storms is all part of the fun and there's also various options to speed yourself up if your lucky enough to get a good mystery box.
Admittedly it doesn't take long to win the game but it remains fun for a long time afterwards and there are always the multiplayer options to keep you entertained, I spent many a late night as a youngster playing with other likeminded whippersnappers.
I think that this game is a great innocent gem and ideal for children but also great fun for adults too.
Mario Kart 64 is one of the best multiplayer experiences on the Nintendo 64, a fact which still holds true in this generation of games consoles.
The single player is split into a number of cups, each one consisting of a handful of races and increasing in difficulty. There are three settings - 50cc, 100cc and 150cc - with the opponents getting tougher as the numbers get higher. On the later levels at the higher difficulties, you'll be screaming at the screen with how tough it is.
This game truly excels in multiplayer though. You can choose from either a straight forward race, taking on your friends in any of the tracks available in the single player, or battle mode, where you are given three balloons on the back of your kart and have to pop everyone elses using items scattered around the purpose-built levels.
There are loads of items to use against your opponents - one of the major gripes many people have with the game is how easy it is to get knocked off first place by those miles behind. This keeps it interesting though, balancing the game for those who play it too much and those who have just started.
This game has well-earned its reputation, though would keep you occupied much longer as a multiplayer rather than a single player game.
Now you can race with your favorite Nintendo characters including : Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Yoshi, DK, Wario and Bowser. However, I will warn you i your characters get knocked out by another characters during the game, and the speed levels of getting back on track is different to other character depending if you have a light character like peach or toad, it will take less longer, a character like Mario, Luigi or Yoshi will take average time, so not too long, not too quick, but a character like Wario, DK or Bowser it will take longer. So choose carefully!
You can play one player, two player, three player or even four player - if you wish!
With player one and player 2 you can play Mario grand pre, V.S and battle, but with player one you can play grand trial.
With players three and four you can only play V.S. or battle.
the levels they have of this game are 50 (which is the easy level) 100 (which is average level) and 150 (which is diificult level)
Grand pre: You race will all the characters in the game, and you have the choice of what cup you want to win, mushroom cup, star cup, flower cup, or special cups.
The places you race in include : Yoshi Valley, Wario's stadium, Rainbow world, DK jungle land, moo moo farm, royal castle and Bowser's castle.
In order to complete the game you must will a trophies whether you come first, second or third.
However you can practice before you enter the grand pre by doing trials where you can race round your chosen place, in three laps and you get get notified how long it took you, once you know you then need to try and beat it! And you can do this as little or long as you like! Once, you've beaten your record go and compete in the grand pre!
In V.S. you choose your place as seen in the cups you win, it is a bit like the grand pre, but you race your team members but, you have to wait until your player comes at least third to end the game. So why not compete with your friends and see who is champion at Mario Kart!
In battle, the same as V.S. but in puzzle like places and you have to scout around the area trying to find object to hit your enemies (your challenged team mates!) You start the battle with three balloons, if you get hit by an object or fall into the pit you loose a balloon and the first one to loose three balloons looses, so it's who can survive to win the game!
I used to love this game and you can challenge all your favorite nintendo characters and I did that and enjoyed every minute playing this game - I was even late for school one day cause I played on this for so long! My teacher wasn't happy and I had to lie too which wasn't good! Sadly, I've got rid of it along with the nintendo, I have played more modern versions of Mario Kart but they are nothing like this original games and this proves that any game that was the original is always better! so five out of five stars for me!

But everything that made mario kart so addictive and playable is present here except this time its a whole lot better!! This time the game is fully 3D with new and better characters, items and race courses. Lets start with the character roster.

In mario kart 64 there are 4 cups altogether, these include the mushroom, flower, star and special cup (The easiest cup is the mushroom while the hardest is the special) each cup contains 4 courses to race on. There are also 3 types of engine power you can choose from, they are 50cc, 100cc and 150cc (again the more engine power the faster you will be but also the faster the computer racers will be which makes it harder. So choosing the special cup with 150cc engine is proper hardcore!!)
This game is an absolote gem if you have a nintendo 64 you have to purchase this game, even if you have a nintendo wii you can download this game from the virtual console. Mario kart games has that ability for anyone to pick it up and play it and enjoy it no matter if its an hardcore gamer or your gran most people will really enjoy this gem of a game. Till this day mario kart 64 still is my favourite version of the mario kart series with the excellent courses, music and the best battle mode up to 4 players! It really is racing gold.
When I was a student in the distant past I shared a flat with four other guys. We had a 14in old TV and an N64, the only game we ever played was Mario Kart. I through the SNES version was good but this one is better, a lot better. Not only do you get more tracks / power ups / etc you get the best new feature off all. Four player split screen multi player. Its super there is nothing better than racing 3 off your friends in a heated dash to the finish line. Many many hours were lost in this game, there is nothing worse than when you are about to win a race than to get hit with a shell from behind and end up coming in last. The single player is great also, the computer players put up a great fight right to the finish line.
We all know it and love it. Mario Kart 64 is one of many excellent N64 games and is a faithful update on the original Super Mario Kart on the SNES.
First released in the UK in 1997, the same year as the N64 console, this is a timeless multiplayer classic for up to 4 players.
There are 16 race tracks in total and 8 characters to choose from, all of whom have slightly different characteristics which I think are based on their size and weight. For example; Toad is tiny and as such is faster than most other characters, but on the downside, he can get smashed out of the way by a fast moving Bowser or other large character.
The tracks are spread over 4 different tournaments: the mushroom cup (50cc), the flower cup (100cc), the star cup (150cc) and the special cup (which has the craziest tracks).
There are four game modes, Grand Prix, Battle, Time Trial and Versus, however you will most likely find yourself (and your friends) on Grand Prix or Battle mode. There is also an unlockable fifth game mode called Extra, which just means mirror-mode - where the tracks are reversed. This Extra mode is awesome on certain maps like Toad's Turnpike where you can race your buddies whilst facing oncoming traffic!
As with Super Mario Kart there are a variety of weapons at your disposal to make life harder for your opponents on the track including old favourites like banana skins, green shells and good old faithful red shells which heat seek and never let you down, well ok, sometimes they do.
The control you have over your kart is perfect. It's a smooth ride and the cart is very responsive to the control stick and once you get a bit of practice you'll master power-sliding round corners and braking just after hitting a banana-skin to negate its effect. The tracks are full of obstacles and hazards as well as boosts, weapons and short-cuts to keep it interesting.
Battle mode deserves a few words of its own. There is no racing here, only 4 battle arenas for 2-4 players to fight it out with the weapons normally found on the racetrack. Each kart has 3 balloons tied to it and one is popped each time you are hit with any of the weapons. When there are 3 or 4 of you playing, the first player to lose all his balloons turns into a bomb on kart-wheels and gets the pleasure of helping sway the match by driving into one of the remaining players and exploding.
My brother and I sometimes used to sit on top of the forts on the Battle mode 'Block Fort' arena and agree to be peaceable for a while whilst we both pumped as many green shells as we could out into the arena below. Once the level was suitably saturated with fast-moving, deadly shells, battle would commence, just to make it extra interesting. Stupid, I know, but hey, that's what we did : )
Back to the present though, I still play Mario Kart with my mates and it is as infinitely entertaining as it is good humoured.
"Mario Kart 64" is a racing video game. It was first released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997 by Nintendo. In the United States, the game received a guidance rating of "K-A" which deemed it appropriate for all ages.
Serving as a sequel to the popular Super Nintendo release titled "Super Mario Kart", Mario Kart 64 returns to the track and pits popular licensed Nintendo characters against one another in a kart style race. In conforming to the genre, the races are fast, special items are in a great abundance, and the experience is fun to play through.
Mario Kart 64 offers two gameplay modes for single players and three gameplay modes for two or more. The bulk of the game is concentrated into the "Grand Prix" mode which contains three levels of difficulty distinguished by kart engine sizes; 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc. After selecting a difficulty setting, the player will be brought to a driver selection screen which presents eight popular characters including Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong. From there the player must select a tournament, or "cup", to compete in which each include four different race courses. The tracks are arranged from shortest to longest, and the cups themselves are arranged similarly with the quickest tournament being the "Mushroom Cup" on the far left and the longest tournament being the "Special Cup" on the far right. Time trials allow any single course to be selected and it is the player's objective to race against him or herself to set the quickest possible time. The third included mode for multiplayer is the "battle" mode. Here, each active player is equipped with three balloons and must use special items against their opponents to dislodge them.
The racing experience is what one may expect from a kart based video game. Players must navigate their way through a series of bumps, hills, jumps, and other racing platforms while collecting items represented by multicoloured diamonds. Driving through these colourful objects will randomly generate an attack item, such as heat seeking turtle shells or slippery banana peels, and the Z button arms it. Successful use of these items will temporarily incapacitate an opponent which grants the player a competitive advantage in being able to pass the disoriented character. Despite being a fun gaming experience, I found it to be very short lived. Due to there only being a total of 16 courses available, I easily whizzed through the title in a single afternoon and felt little reason to play it afterward. The battle function when a second player is present continually breathes new life into the video game as the unpredictability of a human player is always challenging, however I do not feel compelled to play the game very often when on my own.
The graphics are presented from a trailing view of the player's character. While the player does not often see the faces of the drivers in play, I found the telltale characteristics of their attire to provide an easy enough way to identify them. Mario includes his typical red plumber's outfit and Browser is accented by a variety of spikes in his back, for example. The animation frame rates are smooth and I did not notice any obvious areas of slow down. The soundtrack provides an interesting listen though suffers from repetition on longer courses which is especially noticeable throughout the Special Cup. The musical scores are quick to loop, however the transition from end to beginning is soft and requires intentional listening to notice when a loop occurs. The sound effects are lively and light hearted, and are suitable for a kart based racing game.
As a single player video game, I would be hesitant about recommending Mario Kart to prospective buyers. The game provides too few incentives to regularly play it as players will simply be repeating tournaments and courses. It is otherwise an excellent audio and video package which could be found useful in a multiplayer setting.
Thanks to the wonders of the Virtual Console on my Nintendo Wii, i've been able to rediscover various gems from days gone by, the most recent of which has been Mario Kart 64, originally released back in 1997 for the Nintendo 64 console and available now as a download purchase on the VC for 1,000 Wii Points which is equal to seven pounds when bought through your Wii console.
As a huge fan of Mario Kart and of retro Nintendo generally, the Virtual Console has been an utter joy. Unlike XBOX Live Arcade where games are often reimagined or remixed for download purposes, Nintendo look to give you the original game undiluted which is great for purists and in Mario Kart 64 we have the epitome of this ethos. The game has been tidied up slightly. The notoriously soft visuals from N64 games have been put into better focus and the colour feels like it's had a nice injection of the famous Nintendo vibrancy which means you won't need those rose tinted spectacles to enjoy it.
For me, Mario Kart 64 has always held the title of the second best Mario Kart title but that is down to the brilliance of the original Super Mario Kart rather than any deficiency here. 64 introduced wider and much longer tracks compared to SMK that feels a little strange at first but has proven to be the template for all subsequent Kart outings.
Even though the tracks are vast they don't lack in imagination and are varied in terrain and location from ice caps to desert to outer space. Each of the sixteen selectable tracks are all hugely different and that's something that no racers from this time can boast as the likes of Ridge Racer which was released a little over a year before had only one selectable track which you could drive forwards or.... backwards...
Like all Mario Kart games the single player game is fine but not long lived. It's the multiplayer side of things that has kept people coming back for almost fifteen years and few games can match the sheer fun that MK64 delivers when you have four players around a tv shoulder to shoulder and the cutesy graphics and sound effects belies a fiercely competitive battlefield on track.
I don't think the battle mode is quite as good as it could be and certainly not as good as the multiplayer grand prix mode but that might just be because i'm not too good at it which is often known to cloud my judgment.. The character roster is slightly different from the original Mario Kart with the ever popular Wario stepping in for Koopa Troopa and Donkey Kong Junior making way for the real thing but the dynamics remain the same with groups of heavier drivers with a higher top speed like Bowser and DK, good accelerators such as Peach and Yoshi as well as good all rounders Mario and Luigi making up the grid.
As a download there really is nothing negative to say about Mario Kart 64. Other great titles like Mario 64 or older Zelda games have been superseded by newer versions on more modern consoles but Mario Kart 64 remains a champion in its genre with pretenders like Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing failing to emulate the magic that Nintendo did so long ago on inferior hardware.
Mario Kart 64 the second game in the Mario Kart series, possibly a let down compared to the SNES version, the game features 16 tracks much like most other Mario Kart games, and 8 characters. The game supports up to 4 players in versus and battle modes, and 2 players in versus, battle and Grand Prix (Otherwise known as the story mode).
The game has good gameplay, features decent challenging AI, it will keep you entertained for a few hours, especially if your using the multiplayer mode, 2 player races feature 6 ai, but no ai feature in 3 or 4 player races. As with all Mario Kart games it features the 50, 100 and 150cc classes as well as the secret mirror mode. The games version of Rainbow Road also features in the N64 Game F-zero-x, although the track is altered in F-zero to feature less barriers and other slight track alterations.
To be honest, you'd be better off buying Mario Kart Wii, it features 4 tracks from the N64 version of Mario Kart, and also features several tracks from other versions of Mario Kart.
Mario has appeared in such a sheer quantity of games in his lifetime that you'd expect there to be a good few duds out there, a few outings where Mario fails to shine, and with the exception of Mario Tennis astonishingly all his games have been top notch. As is certainly the case with Mario Kart 64.
The first Mario Kart appeared on the Snes (Super Nintendo), it combined simple but competent graphics, racing and fighting to produce a title that at the time was unique and very, very addictive.
The years passed and eventually MK was released on the N64, would the game survive the transition with all it's addictivity (D'oh that's not a word) in tact. Thankfully the game not only keeps it's original merits but expands them and even has a few of it's own.
For those who have never played, Mario Kart 64 challenges the player to whizz around colourful and at times interactive tracks in go karts that come in 3 engine powers (50cc, 100cc 150cc). You can choose to play as 1 of 8 characters, including Mario, Yoshi, Bowser and Donkey Kong as well as 4 other well known characters.
There are four game types, grand prix (straight forward racing in a leaders table), time trial (race to achieve the perfect time), versus (race against friends and family) and battle (possibly the most enjoyable game mode, each player starts in an arena with 3 balloons, the idea, be the first to pop your opponents balloons).
The idea....to finish in as high a position as possible, to help you along the way you can run into small question marked blocks, in a one armed bandit style (a rotating reel) you will receive either a weapon or defensive measure.
Weapons include green shells, fire in a straight line and bounce of obstacles, red shells, heat seeking shells that lock onto the nearest target, mushrooms that give a sudden burst of speed and a star that renders you invincible and gives a slight increase in speed for a short time.
As mentioned earlier the tracks are somewhat interactive, by that I mean that aspects of the scenery will change and move. In a race known as the Kalamari Desert there is a train whose tracks cut right accross the raceway causing unweary characters to bundle headlong into the 5:15 express. In Bowsers castle there are whomp blocks that do their best to squish our plucky plumber and his petrol propelled pals.
The races are split into four cups, the easiest Mushroom cup, the flower cup, the star cup and finally the special cup which features dramatically more difficult race maps.
I do have one small gripe with the game, it's not something wrong just something missing. I think the addition of heaps of unlockable content (new characters, carts and so on) would have added a new depth to the game, only a small grumble though in an otherwise brilliant game.
The games cartoony style and mixture of fast paced racing and cunning traps and weaponary make Mario Kart 64 an absolute winner. Those of all ages will love it and the various game modes will provide something for the racer and something for the battle hardened. Definately reccomended to everyone, games don't get more fun than this.
Mario Kart 64 was a hugely influential game as far as my love of Nintendo goes and one of the key games the console sold on. The game was the step up to the N64 for Mario and his racing buddy's with a choice of 16 tracks for racing (split into 4 cups, with each cup having 4 tracks, going from the easy races to the harder ones) as well as 4 battle tracks (to play battle mode, in which players would try to pop opponents balloons). The game was released in Japan in 1996 and followed in Europe and America the following year before the re-release in 2007 on the Wii Virtual console.
The game plays well on it's single player mode, despite continuous and well publicized cheating by the computer players. But it would be the multiplayer game that would really show how good the game is, with up to 4 players racing around the wide variation of courts, from the easy beginners circuits like Moo Moo Farm and Luigi Raceway, to the complex and multi routed Yoshi Valley and the devilishly difficult Toads Turnpike. The game like it's predecessors featured items, for use by the players, such as lightning bolts, stars, bananas, shells and mushrooms, all fans of the Mario games would be use to these sorts of franchise mainstays.
The items are:
Stars-makes your player invincible (bar falling off the circuit)
Lightning Bolt-make all the other players shrink and allows you to run over them squishing them
Blue shell-A shell that when fired will track down the leader and hit them
A fake item block-a item that will leave a block that looks like the item blocks on the track
Red Shells-track down your nearest opponents (come in 1 and 3's)
Green shells-fires in a straight line (come in 1 or 3's)
Bananas-can be tossed in front, or left behind for rivals to slip on (come in 1 or 3's)
Mushrooms-a boost (come in 1 or 3's or the golden variety, which lasts for a set time as opposed to uses)
The games characters should also be (on the whole) pretty well know, with famous faces like Bowser, Donkey Kong, Toad, Peach and Luigi making up the cast of the game. With levels based around the names (and sometimes levels of the games) where the characters originate. The characters themselves behave in 1 of 3 types, the lighter races (Peach, Yoshi and Toad) are all slightly better to accelerate whilst the heavy characters like Donkey Kong, Wario and Bowser all have the better top speeds. Whilst the Mario and Luigi have the better all-round abilities with a good combination of speed and acceleration.
The controls are simplicity at the very best:
To go forward press/hold "A"
To brake press/hold "B" (hold it to reverse)
To turn you use the analogue stick
To use an item press the Trigger ("Z") or the bottom C button
To "hop" press the "R" button (the right shoulder button) (more of an advanced technique)
So the game has a winning formula of recognisable characters great level design and simple controls. But yet there's so much more to it than just racing, the game oozes class, from the easy levels such as Luigi's raceway which may well be a beginners track to the viciously punishing Wario Stadium where a single mistake can cost you severely no two tracks are too similar, or feel like they were just there to be filler tracks. Everything feels like its there for a reason and the reason is to be played and enjoyed there's not any time where you feel the game tries to be something it's not, the game is there for the purpose of fun.
Though lets be frankly honest as brilliant as the game is, the rose tinted spectacles cannot hide the fact the game has aged. The games is now over a decade old and lets be honest, it looks it, with relatively blocky graphics used to hide the N64's limitations as best as Nintendo possibly could, sadly in this day and age with Mario Kart Wii openly available to games, the graphics of this game look really poor. The game fails to cope fully with what we now see as graphical expectations, despite being genuine 3D in course structure a lot of the trees and the such were 2D on closer inspection (by driving up to them you could see they were missing a whole dimension) and the textures always looked like they'd been smoothed out.
As well as this the sounds were incredibly limited, though working on a 12 MegaByte cartridge this is understandable, as the technical limitations of the day added to Nintendo sticking to the cartridge did with out a doubt hinder them in the creation of the game.
Though this isn't to take away from what a truly remarkable experience the game is, especially in multiplayer, where 1-4 players can compete on any of the courses in a 3 lap race. The game really does peak here, and was arguably with Goldeneye the N64's base for the mulitplaying games that the console became known for, the fact is the game is so easy to play that you and you mates can play it on the first pick up and have fun with out needing to learn any complex techniques, which makes the game appealing to newbies. Added to the fact that the game is fun, and the game draws in players effortlessly so your rarely with out someone to play with.
The games ultimately simple game play added to a few advanced techniques made the game something that you could pick up and play, as well as learn to play and learn the tricks. The brilliance of it's appeal is solely in the unadulterated fun that even now, years after the console the game was made for ceased production the game is still selling on the Wii virtual console, the game, much like the original Mario game, will forever live in Nintendo folklore.
Personal opinion in the battle between Mario Kart and Diddy Kong Racing, does side with DKR though as I felt it expanded on what Mario did with regards to the multiple vehicles and the much stronger single player mode. Though this is a mere matter of opinion, I thought DKR was the better game, but spent much longer playing MK64.
