Advantages: Addictive
Disadvantages: Not as good as the original, Cheating opponents
Driving dangerously is fun. Hitting people with stuff is fun. Mario Kart 64 has combined these two and has made a very fun game indeed. Mario Kart was originally a game on the SNES, one of the standout games that really sold the console. It will never be bettered, not even by Mario Kart 64. It’s just too original and unbelievably addictive, one of those games where one more go becomes a three-hour session. Mario Kart is original in its own right though, but it just doesn’t have the sheer thrill of the original. So here’s the deal, you and seven other competitors race around sixteen lovely 3D courses. Every time you go into a box with a question mark on it you get some sort of weapon. These weapons range from a lightning strike which every except you reduce significantly in size for a brief period, leaving them ripe to be driven over and squashed. Very simple indeed. The characters are the standard Nintendo guys, Mario, Luigi Toad, Peach, Wario, Yoishi, Donkey Kong and Bowser. Each character has their own course, which are generally well suited to their set-up. The grand prix section, which can only be played by one or two players, comes in three difficulty levels, 50, 100 and 150 cc. It’s an easy game to master, so staring 150 cc is not out of the question. Each grand prix is done over four courses, of which there are four sets, Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup and Special Cup, each getting progressively more difficult. There’s also a Versus mode where up to four players can race against each other . This can be great fun when the maximum amounts of players are there, but it’s not quite as enjoyable when only two are playing. The time trial mode is tremendously addictive, you’ll be cancelling social events just so you can shave a few milliseconds off that record on Luigi Raceway. If you break a certain time on certain courses you can unlock ghosts, which
are really good times made by the games producers. Following them guys is a pretty good way to get a great time. And now for the best part of the game, Battle mode. It’s up to four players trying to hit each other over four courses. Each player has three balloons tied to them, every time the player is hit he loses a balloon. When the player has been hit three times, he’s dead, unless it’s between three or four players, then he becomes a little bomb. Very fun indeed. Overall it’s a fun and addictive game, nice graphics and hummible music are just added bonuses.Marred only by the fact that your computer opponents are frequently given a little bit of a help so that you're never too far away from them. So get a few friends and learn how to act like children again.
