Paper Mario – the stuff N64 games should be made of

Ever thought of an RPG? An RPG starring Mario and other characters, new and old, from the Mario and Luigi series? An turn-style based RPG in which you hit koopa troopas on the head with big mallets, jump on them or set a fire-flower on them, yet still with all the graphical animation of a 3D Mario game, but where that characters are seemingly made of paper? Well, now you have!

Having only played an hour and a half since I got it, the plot so far is that Mario and Luigi have been asked to go to a party that Peach is holding. While there, Bowser uproots the castle, flies away, beats Mario in a fight because he has stolen the Star Rod from the Star Elders so he can grant himself any wish he wants, and sends Mario down near Toad village where he is picked up by Toad. He you learn the fundamental basics of the game, where you get star points and use your flower power to attack enemies at large. In the field, if you hit an enemy first, you automatically get the first strike. Also, there is an item that Peach gives you that means if you press buttons at specific times during battle you’ll either give more damage of receive less.

This idea incorporated the best of the RPG world (without FF9 graphics) with the best of the platformer world into a successful bundle that rockets and boogies all night long! Some might complain that it is too ‘cute’, or childlike. I reserved my judgement on this when it was announced to be released, and subsequently enjoyed it to the full. There are even badges that you can wear during battle so your stats can go up, or you earn more money, or the SFX changes when you hit something!

All in all, so far, 96% and a well done to one of the last games on the N64!

Advantages:

RPG players will love this game
So will the platformers
OUTSHINES ZELDA! (Oh yes it does)
Worth a bundle of notes on any system r>Still the good old Mario humour

Disadvantages:

Not stunning graphics, but good none the less
Takes a while to get into
No voice-overs
