Advantages: Fast, furious, fun!
Disadvantages: Short lived /not enough tracks
Ridge Racer 64 is a superb racing game, probably the Nintendo64's best racing game.
The graphics are excellent, if a little undetailed when compared to the PlayStation efforts. However, frame rate is amazingly high, and the game is very, VERY fast.
The music is a bit poor, the usual Ridge Racer Japanese techno, but it does suit the natuyre of the game. Engine sounds are fairly good, although for some reason they are mssing in the multiplayer mode.
Which brings us on to the multiplayer. RR64 is the first 4 player Ridge Racer, and as a multiplayer game it is good phone. It might not be up to Mario Kart or GoldenEye standards, but it certainly passes the time.
The game itself steers well, and there are a number of handling styles to select from. Difficulty starts off low but gets very high, but this game will be finished in a week. There are still cars to collect, though, and secrets to find, so it will last past completion.
Overall, I recommend you buy this game if you are after a decent racer for the Nintendo64. If you have a PlayStation as well, though, Ridge Racer Type 4 is where the smart money is.
A good racing game is what I think. There are plenty of cars to choose from and there are a reasonable amount of courses although some are just repeated in different conditions.
There are lots of bonus cars to win including a Golf Buggy.
All cars can do 360 skids if you turn then hold B for a few seconds and if you're good you can get 720's out of some cars. The gameplay is fairly realistic and is good to play for a while, but too much playing may make you a little bored. The best way to play the game is on the multiplayer mode with up to four people playing at once head to head. If you have ever played the PC game Need for Speed then this is an N64 simularity. There are no professional drivers or teams in this game like in the formula 1 or Vrally games, but it doesn't matte
r because the game is just as good without them.
In the championship mode you need to win the stage of 3 courses and then go to Attack car where you can race 1 on 1 to win the car. If you beat it then you get the car. There are usually three possible cars to win per stage and you have to win that stage once to be able to attack each car one at a time
