Advantages: Amazing action, does things with your N64 that you wouldnt have thought possible
Disadvantages: None unless you dislike such games
Sin and Punishment was originally produced for the N64 in 2000, before getting a release on the Wii's VC.
Please note that this game has intensive flashing lights and effects!
Developed by Treasure and Nintendo equates to one of the greatest on-rails 3D shooter ever made. Perhaps this is a bold statement, but it isn't unfounded.
In a similar fashion to games of this genre, control of movement is limited to an 'on rails' experience for the majority of the game, but unlike them you have additional aspects that can be controlled which are roll, and perform a double jump to avoid oncoming fire, run side to side to dodge obstacles, sword attacks to knock back enemy fire where possible or slash enemies and a first for the genre, movement side to side!
As far as difficulty goes, the game is never frustrating but will test you. Easy is easy, but normal and hard are seriously intense with roughly a significant number of enemies on screen and let me put it to you, the number of enemies on in the first place is awe inspiring. In Lehman words - its like rush hour at times!
There are several stages in the game, with the first stage being basically a quick introduction to the game's mechanics i.e. gun and sword. As implied previously, after this first stage, it all goes super intensive. Enemies populate every bit of your screen in glorious 3D without a hint of slowdown requiring you to take them out asap by gun or sword.
In the same vein as contra, bosses are scattered throughout the stages and come in various shapes and sizes.
But this is all good and done, whats so special?
The interesting music, coupled with amazing art direction and stylish graphics that hold up by even todays standard. The game pushes out graphics and makes your N64 produce visuals, effects that you would not expect. This all has the effect of making the game an amazing ride, one that you wont want to end anytime soon.
Although it is possible to complete the game in a few hours, it will have you coming back for more - a testament to its well designed gameplay.
In summary there is not much to fault with sin and punishment. It does exactly what it says on the tin, fast paced, good action game. If you enjoy games like Contra, Metal Slug, Starfox, or Panzer Dragoon you really need to play this game (preferably on the N64) and witness one of the finest games ever made.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 9.8/10
Summary: One of the finest action games ever made
