Star Wars Episode 1 - Pod Racer (N64)

Newest Review: ... user interface with the game options is tricky at first, but good once you're used to it, and the graphics are excellent, ... more

... especially when you have an expansion pak fitted to your console. No problems here either. My problems with this game begin with the actual tracks themselves. There are, I think, about 17 (correct me if I'm wrong) different courses to race on in Racer, but they aren't actually different. Tracks that are built on the same planet are actually all part of one large track, with various inter-connecting parts which are either closed off or opened up, in order to create a new course for a different gaming level. For my first opinion here on dooyoo, I've taken the easy way out and recycled an old op of mine from Ciao. So, without further ado.... ----- Now, don't get me wrong. There's a lot of good points about this game, and it's quite enjoyable to play, especially when you're up against a chum. But I feel a bit let-down by it, and if you'll indulge me, I'll explain why.... Before I go any further I have to give you the mandatory explanation of the plot. Racer is based on the pod-racing sequance in the move "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace", when Anakin Skywalker participated in a dangerous high-speed pod race to help out ...  Read the complete review

Released on the same day as the much-anticipated movie Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, Episode 1 Pod Racer really captures the feel of the film it was based on. The concept of the game is that you are a pod racer, a pilot of one of the racing vehicles from the scene in the Phantom Menace where Anakin Skywalker races in order to help out his new friends. You can choose from any of the pod racers in the movie (including Anakin and the vile Sebulba) and race on 25 tracks on 8 different worlds. The graphics are very nice, and look even better with the RAM expansion pack, which the game supports. There are four different racing views from which to ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Star Wars Episode 1 - Pod Racer (N64): An example in how to make a good game from a film license (434 words)

I am longtime Star Wars fan but I have to say I was quite disappointed by the Phantom Menace. However when I saw Episode One: Racer fairly cheap I decided to give it a go, after all it was one of the best selling games over the summer (last summer). And I have to say I am very impressed with the game. Unlike just about every other games company out there who try and make a poor platformer or shoot em up out of a film license (except for Rare's excellent Goldeneye) Racer has been developed from the Pod racing part of the film and doesn't have anything else to do with Pahntom Menace. You choose you character and then your racing machine and take part in ...  Read the complete review

This game is one of the best games to be found in the race genre. Only this innovative and somewhat uplifting classic can really mix the heavy inclusion of speed and fire power and create a game with such playability that every time it is switched on the game stays on for hour after hour. The graphics on this game are far superior to anything ever seen before. Each aspect of the visuals is so crystal clear that you are literally blown away by the whole ordeal. The best part about this game has to be the beautiful way in which the speed is illustrated by the visuals, which is always a pleasing sight when the game is in full flow. The only aspect which lets this game down ...  Read the complete review

I think that this is one of the best games of all time on the N64 ... Star Wars;- the Phantom Menace - the film is class enough as it is, but i was very happy that they decided to turn it into a game - and even happier when then turned it into an extremely class game!!! The graphics is excellent, and it is a brilliant game to play with a rumble Pak. I think it is such a class game, and is is definitely in my top 3 N64 games. If you haven't bought it, or worse still, haven't played it, GO TO IT NOW!!! ...  Read the complete review
