Advantages: Great graphics, cool courses, controls spot - on
Disadvantages: Replay value low for some, only head - to - head racing
*A review of Wave Race 64 for the N64.*
Sponsored by Kawasaki Heavy Industries - unless you've the Wii Virtual Console version!
Even on completion of Championship mode on Expert and Reverse there's no credits shown - those responsible for Wave Race 64 deserve great credit! This is one of the best looking N64 titles - wat-er effort they've made for the realistic wave physics and fluid animation. The only slip-up is characters surfacing from solid surfaces.
Of course. There may be debris in the waters of Marine Fortress, but none of the courses are rubbish. Drake Lake looks great, with the fog clearing up as you race - the water like a silver mirror in it's wake. The sinking water level of Southern Island means changes throughout the course of the race; Port Blue can be barrels of fun whilst the winds and waves of Marine Fortress might leave you green; Glacier Coast is snow easy ride and similarly Twilight City should not be taken lightly; whether it's Sunny Beach or Sunset Bay, the graphics are gorgeous.
Wave Race 64 makes splashes in the audio department. "Banzai!" the commentator belts - buoy does he match the ecstasy of mine winning the race! Surprised there was no adjusting the audio level since the output was loud.
The controls work well so the waves need not work against you. Pulling off stunts is easy.
In Championship mode, there is a number of points required to qualify for the single round, and no continues. Still, it won't take many nights to place at the top of the podium.
Given how good the graphics are, I am forgiving that there's no four-player option, but was disappointed that two-player was not amongst a field of four, so only head-to-head racing.
Four racers, twice as many courses. Replay value was strong for myself. Game has battery backup so records are saved. Time Trial and Stunt modes came in for competitive purposes. =)
Summary: Wave Race 64 for N64
