The first wipeout game was a smooth game and quite a new and good idea as well. It was one of the first future racing games available and paved the way for a new generation of racing games to come after it. Games like X-treme G where all based around the principle of wipeout even though not one game could come close in gameplay as the first wipeout did. The sequel to wipeout, wipeout 2097 added enhanced graphics and extra features. The N64 version is an enhanced version of this game and the graphics are of course even better than before with all that 64bit flair.

I was not the bigges wipeout fan although I quite liked it with the analogue controller for the Saturn. The playstation versions I didn’t consider to bother with. I purchased this on the strength of the Saturn Wipeout 2097 and also since it was only a tenner in Virgin, quite a reasonable price for a famed cart such as this. Obviously there were no loading times, which was the main difference from the cd based systems and on top of this the graphics were stunning in comparison with all the effects shining through. The Saturn was famous for not being able to perform complete transparency effects properly although Wipeout 2097 seemed to make them look more stunning than the playstation version. These stunning visuals have definitely taken toll on this version for the N64 as it is equally impressive.

Incase you don’t know, the object in wipeout is to race racing ships in the future across hazardous terrain in different never before seen locales representing different parts of the world in the future at incredible speeds. There are many things that can sway the oucome of the race. There are pickups that can completely destroy competitors and then, since you are hovering about half a meter over the track during the course of the race it is quite easy to crash into things if you do not have the right touch. The vehicles are a lot easier to control with the N64s analogue stick t
hough and provides a rewarding experience.
