Advantages: Time travel, vairety of dungeons and places, lots of characters
Disadvantages: None
This was the first ever Zelda game made with 3D graphics. In my opinion, it's one of the best games every made and is well worth buying, especially since it's now available cheap.
The game is set in Hyrule, a land full of different places to explore and characters to meet. You start off in the Kokiri Forest, and later you go climb Death Mountain, an active volcano, and try to find your way through the Haunted Wasteland, which is a desert where there is a constant sandstorm.
There are eight dungeons to be completed in this game, each of them interesting in their own way. The game starts off with you playing as child Link, and then he goes on to become adult Link. There are seperate dungeons for each. On first playing it, I did find the dungeons quite challenging. The Water Temple is seen by many fans as the most difficult dungeon due to it's various puzzles involving changing the water level.
Even if you find the game easy, Hyrule is a beautiful place to explore. There is also a wide range of background music featured in the game, which I love so much I bought the soundtrack! The Forest Temple features a hauting, beautiful sound and the Castle Market has lively, upbeat and medieval sounding music, both match their respective locations perfectly.
The change from child to adult may be seen as a disadvantage, as there are a few weapons which you can no longer use eg. the Fairy Slingshot. However, as an adult you can do a lot more like ride Epona the horse and use the Hookshot (after finding it - it's the first item you come across as an adult). After completing the first temple, Forest, you can travel through time and go back to being a child again and vice versa. So you don't have to worry if you realise you have forgotten something at this point in the game.
Adult Link can also wear two new tunics, which are given to you free as you progress the game. The Goron Tunic (red in colour)allows you to enter Death Mountain Crater and stay there for as long as you want, while the Zora Tunic (blue in colour) allows you to stay underwater. Adult Link will also receive two new pairs of boots as the game goes on. The Iron Boots will let you walk underwater and the Hover Boots let you hover for a few seconds.
You also learn songs throughout the game, which are played on the Fairy Ocarina you have until you get the Ocarina of Time, just before becoming an adult. They are taught to you by other characters, and aren't complex or hard to remember. They are recorded on the start menu if you do forget any of them.
There is plenty of advice from characters throughout the game to help you on your way. There is an owl who will tell you where to go etc. but he only helps you as a child. Navi is your guardian fairy, who is always with you to help and also point out the weaknesses of your enemies. This makes the game easy for an inexperienced gamer, and perhaps it is annoying for experienced gamers.
The graphics are great for a N64 console. They may seen quite basic now when compared to newer consoles, but for it's time the graphics are very impressive.
The game will keep you going for quite a while with it's eight dungeons and also small mini games that are guarnteed to keep you amused. It is a game that you can enjoy completing over and over, and also just playing again to go exploring. There are still small things I am discovering now, and I have been playing it for more than five years!
It's well worth buying and I recommend this game to anyone who is experienced at gaming and would like to try a Zelda game, as it's definitely one of the best. For anyone who has never really played video games before, this one is a good starter. It shows the real capacity of the N64 and is guaranteed to get you hooked, even if you don't know much about games or Zelda. I had a friend play it once who thought it was great just because you can shop down signs!
It's available cheap. I was able to by another copy (to give my original a break!) for only £5 including postage on ebay. You can still buy new copies, but this one was used.
Summary: Well worth buying
