Ninjatown (DS)
by julwhite This review is for the Nintendo DS game, Ninjatown, developed by Venan Entertainment and Cashmere Publications and published by Southpeak Interactive. Ninjatown is an action and strategy game. The aim of the game is to work through and defending each level by placing ninjas of various different types in different buildings, ... which stop the enemies from reaching the exit area of the screen. There are a range of eight different ninjas, and placing them is important given their different skills. There are forty levels to play, and each is a fun challenge in itself. Each level has around ten waves of enemies which you have to defend against, and the difficulty level is well set so that the challenge increases at a sensible level. As you progress through the game, extra parts of the game are unlocked, which is good at maintaining an interest in the game. The controls are easy to use, and the features of the Nintendo DS are used to their full. Much of the game requires you to use the stylus and touch screen, but there are also times when you have to blow into the microphone as well to help fight back the advance of the enemies. You can also use the d-pad to scroll around the screen to help you see the area which you have to defend. The graphics aren't really that good at first sight, but as they're bright and clear, they're more than good enough and the bright arcadey feel and the happy sound effects and background music all add to the atmosphere of the game. There are lots of tactics in the game, as the placement of each of the buildings is crucial, as is the choice of ninjas. The game is fun to play through, although after a while does become a bit repetitive. However, because the game is easy to pick up and play, there's lots of long term playability in this game. The multi player mode is good fun with a friend as well. Some Nintendo DS games take the view that you only need one cartridge between you and other players to be able to play the game, some require every player to have their own copy. This game compromises, and you can play three of the nine levels with just one cartridge, but need a cartridge on each console to play the other six levels. The game retails for 24.99 pounds but is currently available for 9.98 pounds on Amazon. if you're happy with a second hand copy, these are available at the time of writing for around seven or eight pounds. The game is rated as 7+, so is suitable for all but the youngest of children. In summary, this isn't a bad game, and it's a lot of fun to play through. There are forty levels which you have to complete, and although the game can be a bit repetitive after a while, it's fun to pick up and play for a while. If you can obtain the game for a few pounds, it's definitely worth considering. Read the complete review |

by mchitty NINJATOWN! For a few years now, for some reason or another Ninjas have been incredibly popular on the internet, perhaps even overtaking pirates and badgers in recent years. Similarly, tower defence games have also seen an immense rise in popularity recently. So what better way to attract web nerds and the like than a tower ... defence game that is based around Ninjas? As the descriptive title may give away, Ninjatown is a game in which you are in charge of a town full of Ninjas. In each level you find yourself floating in a balloon, looking down on Ninjatown, whilst it is beseiged by lots and lots of nasty little demons. It's your job to place various types of Ninjas and buildings in order to kill the demons and defend the town. Anyone who has played tower defence games - a genre that many will have come into contact with, especially if you play flash games on the internet - will feel right at home here. What's nice about this though is that it's not a flash game, it's a fully fledged DS game, with 2 screens, and stylus control, and a level of polish expected from a commercial game. As such, this is MUCH BETTER than your average tower defence game. Additional features include special Ninja abilities, for example one of these involves shouting motivationally into the DS microphone, which causes your Ninjas to fight faster and more effectively. The two screens allow for a mini map too, which is handy when you need to get an overall picture of the action. The gameplay itself is great, and the graphics are good too. They're very cute and cartoony, but that style really works for this kind of game and it feels like a solid title. The only real turn-off here is if you're not a fan of silly ninja-based humour. There's a lot of dialogue here that's derived from internet memes and the like. As such you may feel at points that these parts feel a bit forced and silly. On the other hand, some people love this stuff, who am I to judge eh! Overall, the gameplay is good and the graphics are too. I have played my fair share of online tower defence games, and none of them match up to this one. As such, my judgement is YES! Go now DS owners, and pay a visit to Ninjatown! by OneCurlyFry If you've ever played any of those 'tower defence' flash games you'll be pretty familiar with this style of game. The basic iea behind this genre of game is that there is a set pathway on an area of land which enemies move along in 'waves'. Your missin is to stop them from getting to the end of the path (to the metaphorical ... 'tower' by building weapons at the side of the pathway which automatically attack the enemies as they move along the track. In Ninjatown the weapons are 'ninja huts' all of which contain 2 ninjas. Different huts provide you with different types of ninjas, from basic ninjas which will walk up to the enemies in their area and attack to snowball throwing ninjas which will throw ranged attacks at the monsters which slow them down. This along provides a lot of fun exciting gameplay as the maps change, new enemies are introduced etc. But as you progress through the game you are able to upgrade your huts, build 'helper buildings' (like a dojo, which increases attacking power of surrounding buildings) and finally, one of my favourite features 'old master ninja powers'. These are basically god powers which allow you to attack monsters in more powerful ways using the stylus and even the microphone. The game contains tonnes of monsters, varieties of ninjas, upgrades and maps, all which provide hours of awesome gameplay. Read the complete review |
