Advantages: Well balanced gameplay, addictive and satisfying

Disadvantages: Can get stuck easily

Firstly, I should say that this is a fantastic game and possibly the best strategy game I've ever played, certainally on a hand held console in any case. The reason it doesn't get the full 5 stars is because inevitably (unless you're some kind of genius), you'll hit a wall at some point. What I mean is that you'll progress in the game until you get to a point where you simply can't get any further and you can't work out how to win (unless you get the answers online).

Advance Wars works like this - you are in control of some form of army. Displayed in a grid like may consisting of various terrains. One army unit will take up one square on the map and each turn you get to move them, build more units, or attack your enemies. It's a very simply concept, yet you have to have a good strategy at all times. Once you win a map, you progress to another with the game getting gradually more and more difficult.

To add to the mix, you gradually unlock more and more generals who you can select to play as. Each general has their own bonuses and weaknesses and you have to select a mix that suits the scenario the best.

The graphics are fine for a strategy game and the ds and the gameplay is addicitive. There's nothing better than gradually building up your army and then obliterating your evil opponents.

In terms of age, I would say that this is good for teens upwards. Under 10s will probably struggle a little unless they are smart beyond their age, although maybe 8 or 9 year olds could handle it.

If you have a DS and want a game a little more deep than the pappy Imagine games and such like, this is a must buy. Just be aware of the fact that you will get stuck, more than once!

Summary: A must buy for anyone who likes strategy games
